Rector's Ramblings

One of my favorite Hebrew Testament stories is the story of Elijah on Mt. Horeb, where he meets God. The Israelites have grown weary of God's prophets and killed all of them except Elijah. He is unsure what to do. While God talks to Elijah, he doesn't meet God until God tips Elijah off that God will be passing by his mountain cave hideout.

" The Lord said, "Go out and stand on the mountain before the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by." Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, "What are you doing here, Elijah?"

Worship

Worship Schedule
Join us for weekly worship at Christ Church. Regular weekend worship services take place on Saturdays at 5:30 pm at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road, and on Sundays at 8:00 am, 9:15 am (church), 9:15 am (parish hall) and 11:15 am at Christ Church, Frederica.  Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children, takes place during the 9:15 am worship service at Christ Church. On Wednesdays, at 12:00 pm, a Healing service is held at Christ Church and at 6:30 pm, X Church takes place.
Choir Commissioning and Newcomers Welcome

On Sunday, November 17, we will be recognizing all the dedicated vocalists and musicians who participate in the music programs at Christ Church during the annual Choir Commissioning, at the 9:15 am worship service in the Parish Hall. (There will be only service at 9:15 that day.)

This will be an inspiring morning of music, with our Christ Church Adult, Treble, Chorister and Bell Choirs all participating, along with musical guests  Mr. Simon Newman on timpani, and brass and percussion accompanists from the Coastal Georgia Youth Orchestra. Please welcome Jacob Bady (Trumpet 1), Isaiah Seals (Trumpet 2), Kaylin Cox (Trombone 1), Evan Jimmerson (Trombone 2), Jacob Torbert (Euphonium) and Landon Wilson (Percussion).

The 11:15 Liturgy in the Church will have essentially the same music minus the Hand Bell Choir and the children (because we don't all fit).

In addition to celebrating our choirs on Sunday at 9:15 am, we will be recognizing our newcomers to Christ Church with a special liturgy. Please join us for this time of praise, commitment and renewal!
Thanksgiving Community Worship
The annual  Thanksgiving   Community  Worship  service  will take place on Sunday, November 24, at 4:00 pm, at Saint Simons United Methodist Church, in the village. This special time of worship includes hymns, prayers, Old and New Testament readings and an outreach offering for local missions. The Christian faith  community  on St. Simons gathers together just a few times for worship, which makes this a special  Thanksgiving  tradition.

Adult Sunday Morning Class
Coming up in Advent: Faithful by Adam Hamilton
The Adult Class will finish with  The Gospel According to Leviticus  on November 24 and then will pick up the Advent Study,  Faithful: Christmas Through The Eyes of Joseph on December 1 for the four weeks of Advent, ending on December 22. We'll take a brief break on December 29 and January 5, then on January 12, we will begin a study entitled Reckless Love: Jesus' Call to Love Our Neighbor which will take us to February 23, 2020. Then, on March 1, 2020 (the first Sunday in Lent) we'll begin a Lenten Study for the seven weeks of Lent. All are invited to join us. The class meets in the Adult Sunday classroom in the Parish House. For more information, contact Bob Brown at
[email protected] .
Men's Study Group

The Men's Discussion Group gathers on Wednesday mornings at 10:30 am in the Youth Room in the Parish House. They are beginning a new study of Thomas
Sowell's Discrimination and Disparities, which presents a wide array of empirical evidence to challenge the idea that different economic outcomes can be explained by any one factor, be it discrimination, exploitation, or genetics. If you'd like to join the group , please contact Te Turner at [email protected] .
Wednesday Advent Study Starts Early This Year
Fr. Tom and Rabbi Rachael Bregman will lead four Wednesday sessions that take a deep dive into the history of the birth of Christ. The study will utilize Amy-Jill Levine's, Light of the World: A Beginner's Guide to Advent and will explore the biblical texts surrounding the story of the birth of Jesus, tracing the Christmas narrative through the stories of Zechariah and Elizabeth, Mary, the journey to Bethlehem, and the visit from the Magi. The group will meet at 1:00 pm on 11/27, 12/4, 12/11 and 12/18. A simple lunch will be served. Books are available through the Christ Church bookstore for $11.50. Please RSVP by calling the parish office: 912-638-8683.
Women's Book Study
The  women's study group meets on Thursdays at 1:00 pm in the parish hall. The group is reading, The Scarlet Cord: Conversations With God's Chosen Women . The book tells the story of biblical women in a new way, drawing the reader further down her spiritual path and closer to Christ. For more information, please contact  Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] .
Thursday Contemplative Group

Beginning December 5, at 11:00 am, Randy Siegel will lead a weekly contemplative workshop in the Vestry Room of the Christ Church Parish House. Contemplative practices help us know God. Through prayer, worship, scripture, meditation, and silence, we experience God's presence and are healed, renewed and transformed by God's love. The group will meet for five Thursdays from 11:00 am to Noon on December 5, 12, 19 and January 2 and 9. (We will skip the week of Christmas.) Come when you can! Backpack Buddies to Pack on December 11

The Christ Church Backpack Buddy program is feeding 500+ students this school year and we need all the help we can get on packing days. Please join us on the line, on Wednesday, December 11 , at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall and help us get all the bags packed. This will be our final packing of the first school semester and we really need everyone to give us a hand!

For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]
Thanksgiving Basket Collection
The annual collection of food for Thanksgiving food baskets for twenty-three needy families in our community begins November 16-17 and will continue through November 23-24. The final date for food collection is November 26, by 9:00 am. Chair Jeannie Wade asks that you bring non-perishable food items to services at St. Ignatius and Christ Church. Monetary donations are welcome, too, as they will help to purchase a turkey for each basket. Make your check to Christ Church, Frederica and note that it is for Thanksgiving baskets. Checks may be placed in the collection at each service. Food items may also be brought to the Parish Hall on weekdays. On Tuesday, November 26, at 9:00 am, you are invited to help assemble the food baskets in the Parish Hall. Contact Jeannie Wade at  [email protected]  to get more information or to volunteer to help collect, assemble or deliver the food baskets.
Christmas at Sea
It's hard to believe, but Christmas is just 6 weeks away! As much as we hate to rush the season, it's important to start thinking of those who need help and support during the holidays.

One group with whom Christ Church actively collaborates, is the International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found  here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

Christ Church Comforters Watch Caps
In addition to their many other projects, the Christ Church Comforters have been creating beautiful knit caps in various sizes. If you are planning to make a box for the International Seafarers Center - Christmas at Sea program, knit caps in adults sizes, made by the Comforters, will be available for you to add to your box. If you'd like a cap, please contact Mtr. Ashton at [email protected] or Gay Barron at [email protected].
Help Children at Burroughs Molette Whenever You Buy Groceries at Harris Teeter
You can help Burroughs Molette Elementary School every time you shop at Harris Teeter. Simply tell your cashier (during check-out) that you want Burroughs Molette's account number (6700) linked to your Harris Teeter VIC card. Once the account number is linked, every time you shop during the program, 2% of your Harris Teeter brand purchases will be contributed by Harris Teeter to the school. It's that easy!
Help Needed In Martha's GuildMarthasGuild
Christ Church friends --Martha's Guild needs you! We are a small service group, dedicated to preparing and serving food at receptions for the bereaved families and friends of those whose funerals are held at Christ Church. Over time, our small band has become a little too small, so we are eagerly recruiting new members now. It is so easy and so rewarding. Teams are called on for two months at a time and asked to bring finger foods like tea sandwiches, deviled eggs, fruit or cheese trays, cookies, or you may tell us what you like to make. If you would like to serve your church family in this way, please contact Angie Burns at 912-638-2717 or Mtr. Ashton at  [email protected]
The ECW Tour of Homes Needs You Now!
Last spring, 29 agencies primarily serving women and children in need, benefited from ECW's Annual Tour of Homes, and from the sale of our Christ Church Cookbook. This fall, we again are asking for generous donations that will help in so many lives. We look to our church family, and beyond, to make it happen. If you'd like to be a patron or volunteer on Tour Day, March 21, please contact Susie Henning at  [email protected]), or Tami Black at  [email protected], or visit christchurchtourofhomes.org.

Celebrating our Friends at Christ Church

Waverly Brown, one of our most active high school students at Christ Church recently reflected on a diocesan mission trip she made to Appalachia, led by Diocesan Canon Missioner for Children and Youth, Joshua Varner. Waverly's dad, Hugh and brother, Wil, also participated in the mission trip, making it a true family affair for the Browns!
