IN THIS ISSUE
Sunday School classes for children and youth will NOT be meeting on Sunday, November 25. Happy Thanksgiving!

Rector's Ramblings

I revisited a homily I wrote a few Thanksgivings ago for X Church and decided I can't ramble about anything better than this today, so enjoy this "classic" reflection and have a blessed Thanksgiving with your families!

Worship

Advent Begins on a Musical Note
We begin this year's Advent season with special music on Sunday, December 2.  Choral Eucharist will be offered at the 9:15 and 11:15 am liturgies with Advent musical offerings by the Christ Church Choir.  At 5:00 pm, a special Advent Choral Evensong will take place in historic Christ Church. All are invited to attend.
Christmas Poinsettias
Beautiful poinsettias may now be ordered to honor a loved one and decorate our worship spaces at Christmas. The cost is $30 per poinsettia and checks should be made payable to the Christ Church Altar Guild. Please send checks and the names of those you wish to honor to Ethel Horton at 402 Palm Court St. Simons Island, 31522 by Sunday, December 16.

Formation

Adult Sunday Morning Class
The Adult Sunday morning class will being an Advent study in December based on the book,  The Redemption of Scrooge. In this book, the class will discover how the teachings of Jesus can be found in Dickens' Christmas classic. From the ghosts of Christmas past, to the life of the present and the resurrection of Christmas future, this Advent study will "bless us everyone" and reinvigorate our spiritual journeys as we look at this familiar story through the lens of faith. Join the Sunday morning Adult Class as they go from "Bah, Humbug!" to a blessed Advent and a Merry Christmas. Everyone is welcome. The Class meets in the Parish House every Sunday from 10:30 to 11:15 am and the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown is the leader. For more information, please contact Bob at rwb385@gmail.com .

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 am, in the Youth Room, is reading    Islam In Context, Past, Present, and Future, by Peter Riddell and Peter Cotterell.
Please contact Father Tom at tom@ccfssi.org for more information.

Thursday Afternoon Book Study
The focus of this Advent book study will be The First Christmas: What the Gospels Really Teach About Jesus's Birth by Marcus Borg and John Crossan. In this book, the authors help us to see this well-known narrative afresh by answering the question, "What do these stories mean?" in the context of both the first century and the twenty-first century. They successfully show that the Christmas story, read in its original context, is far richer and more challenging than people imagine. The study will begin on Thursday, November 29, at 1:00 pm, in the Vestry room and will meet weekly throughout Advent. The book may be purchased on Amazon for $15.75. Contact Mother Ashton at ashton@ccfssi.org for more information.

Sacred Music of Advent
Father Tom Purdy, Kathleen Turner and Randy Seigel will host a music-themed series for Advent. Join us for lunch at 12:30 pm, following the Healing Service. The programs will take place on Wednesdays, at 1:00 pm, in the Parish Hall.

Week 1 - December 5 - Compare and Contrast Settings of Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus. Father Tom's creative use of posing questions and engaging discussion will structure the program.

Advent Devotional
Living Well Through Advent 2018: Practicing Generosity with All Your Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind is the Advent meditation booklet from Living Compass this year. Copies are available in the church office, or download a copy at

Daily Advent Prayers
Father Tom will send out daily prayers during Advent to all who would like to receive them. If you'd like to be added to the contact list, please contact Fr. Tom at tom@ccfssi.org.

 Children and Youth

EYC and Pathfinders Service Project

Our youth and Pathfinders had a great time this past Sunday when they combined forces to assemble and sort all the non-perishable foods donated for Thanksgiving baskets. That gave the basket packing team on Monday a great head-start for putting together baskets for twenty-three families quickly so they could be delivered that day.

Christmas and Advent Song CD
A collection of traditional carols of Advent and Christmas, sung by our Choristers, Trebles, Youth, and Young Adults will be available on CD, on Sunday, December 9. As the value of children's voices singing of Christ's birth is priceless, donations are welcomed and will support the St. Cecelia Series. (If donating by check, please write "St. Cecelia Series" in the memo line.)

Christmas at Sea
Christ Church actively supports the International Seafarers Center, a group that ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found  here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick. If you'd like to include a warm knit cap, made by our Christ Church Comforters in your box, please contact Gay Barron at gaylorbarron@bellsouth.net.

Fellowship

OMG Trip to White Oak
White Oak promotes endeavors in conservation through innovative science, education, training, and collaborations. We are committed to providing conservation options for the species that need them the most. We invite you to explore our over 16,000-acre haven for people, animals, and ideas and join in our effort to save species.

On November 15th, 21 members from Christ Church loaded into vans and took a trip to the White Oak Conservation center. We had wonderful conversations in the vans. Upon arriving at White Oak, we had a tour of the famous Gilman Hall, where we saw dinosaur artifacts, the Baryshnikov ballet studio, art that was collected from China, and they even had a room with a bowling ally! After our tour, we enjoyed a delicious lunch before embarking on our two hour tour around the conservation area. We got to pet a rhino, see giraffes, meet the dog and cheetah who live together, a dingo and much more! The group had such a great time that discussion has already begun about our next adventure! Learn more about the conservation center here and click here to enjoy the pictures from our trip!
