Rector's Ramblings

Father Tom has been away at Fall Clergy Conference for the last few days and will not be rambling this week. He does wish to take this opportunity to express his deepest gratitude to all who worked so hard, and donated so generously, to make the Island to Island Benefit Concert such an unualified success this past weekend. More than $40,000 was raised to go directly to the hardest-hit areas in the Bahamas. THANK YOU! (Read more here.)

Outreach

Island to Island: Benefit for the BahamasBahamasBenefit

The Island to Island Benefit for the Bahamas Concert, which took place at the SSI Lighthouse this past Sunday, September 29, was a tremendous success and raised over $40,000 for relief efforts in the Bahamas! We sold more than 825 tickets to a host of generous patrons who partied with a purpose! Many, many thanks to these guests and everyone who participated in this benevolent event, including the bands, Roy Gentry and Hired Guns, The Island Kings and The Sensational Sounds of Motown; our fabulous food, drink and event sponsors; and all the wonderful, hard-working volunteers! It took teamwork on an island scale to make this happen! (See more photos of all the fun, here.)

The funds raised by the concert will be going to the following groups:
PERC, Inc. is a not-for-profit U.S. corporation created in 1998 to support the philanthropic work of charitable and community organizations in Abaco, Bahamas (specifically, Hope Town, Man O' War and Marsh Harbour). PERC stands for Preservation, Environment, Recreation, Community. 501c3, vetted by locals who have worked with them for 20 years.
Episcopal Diocese of Southeast Florida - direct assistance through the Anglican Diocese of The Bahamas, The Turks, & The Caicos Islands.  They will ensure money gets where it needs to go via the Anglican Church connections in hard-hit areas.
World Central Kitchen - Jose Andres' charity - they are using helicopters to fly food to places unreachable otherwise. They have served hundreds of thousands of meals in the Bahamas since the hurricane.
Abaco-Winding Bay Relief Fund - Pending 501c3 - This community has local St. Simons/Sea Island residents who live there and they are giving funds directly to people affected by the storm, many of whom stayed, but lost everything. A local member checked them out and vouches for them.

St. Athanasius Food PantryFoodPantry
The StAthanasius Feed My Sheep Food Pantry  needs your non-perishable food donations for October. Please bring them to St. Ignatius and the Christ Church Parish House this weekend or drop off donations in the grocery cart, during regular business hours, at the church office in the Parish House. In addition to regular items that are always needed, like canned vegetables, fruits and meals like Spaghettios, the pantry could use some canned soups for the cool weather that will be coming (eventually!). Thank you for your continued support of this ministry!
Backpack Buddies - Next Packing on Oct. 30

The Christ Church Backpack Buddy team is once again feeding hungry students in Glynn County on the weekends throughout the school year. This year, we are feeding 500+ students and need all the help we can get on packing days! Please join us on the line on October 30, at 10:00 am, in the Parish Hall and help us get all the bags packed!

You can also help by sponsoring a child for $100 for the school year or $50 for half the year.  Just make your check payable to Christ Church, Frederica , and write Backpack Buddies in the memo line. For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected]

Jacket and Sweatshirt Drive
The mission committee has become aware of a great need for sweatshirts and light jackets for the students of Burroughs Molette Elementary School. If you would like to help these children stay warm this winter, we are collecting these items to help them feel comfortable and ready to learn. The sizes needed range from child small (5/6) to child extra large (14/16). Please bring new or slightly used items to the church office by Monday, October 14. For more information, please contact Donna Purdy at [email protected].

St. Athanasius Unveils Signature Square Sign
On Friday, September 27, 2019, our sister church in Brunswick, St. Athanasius Episcopal Church, unveiled its beautiful, new Signature Square sign. The sign is to recognize the anchor of that church in the Brunswick community, not only for its importance as a religious institution but as an educational institution. The hope is that other historic churches in the downtown area will follow suit. Brunswick Mayor, Cornell Harvey;
City Commissioner, Julie Martin; City Manager, Jim Drum; St. Athanasius Senior Warden Brandi Lyde, Father Tom Purdy and a host of other officials and friends of St. Athanasius were on hand for this momentous event. See more photos here.
