ADVOCACY

OV Council Approves Higher Rec Standards

This week, the Oro Valley Town Council approved a comprehensive update to the recreation area requirements for private subdivisions. SAHBA engaged numerous times with Town staff and elected officials to convey our concerns with the new requirements and seek areas of compromise. While well-intentioned, the new higher standards will substantially add to the cost of development as well as reduce the utility of land. The end effect will make it harder for families to afford to live in Oro Valley. After multiple meetings with Town staff, SAHBA provided both written comments and oral presentations to both the Planning & Zoning Commission and Mayor & Council to request mitigating the most burdensome measures. The Council voted 5-2 (Solomon and Greene voted ‘no’) to approve the proposal.

Tucson Council Approves One Water 2100 Plan

The City of Tucson has done a remarkable job over the past several decades managing our water resources. As stated in Tucson’s long-range management plan, the One Water 2100 Plan, these efforts have resulted in the decoupling of population growth and water demand. In other words, we have plenty of water to accommodate building more houses. Yet politicians, and plans such as this, have the tendency to focus on advocating for additional restrictions that may or may not be supported with a clear demonstration of the amount of water actually being conserved. Tucson Water staff has indicated that the forthcoming final document will be responsive to the extensive comments provided by SAHBA. SAHBA also sent a letter to Mayor & Council prior to the Council meeting this week that highlighted the key points of concern, the top of which is making fact-based decisions and working with our industry when new regulations are being considered.

SAHBA Meets with Marana Leadership to Discuss Industry Issues

An integral part of SAHBA’s advocacy efforts includes meeting regularly with key government and elected officials for informal discussions about matters of importance to both government and our members. Recently, SAHBA leaders met with Marana Town Manager Terry Rozema, Deputy Town Manager Erik Montague, Planning & Development Services Director Jason Angell and Marana Water Director Jing Luo. The conversation covered a range of topics including: permit approval times, wastewater capacity, water meter availability and community scale infrastructure projects. SAHBA appreciates the Town’s willingness to have these meetings and looks forward to further collaboration. SAHBA members are encouraged to participate in these problem-solving conversations.

HEADS UP: COT TDC Will be Down This Weekend

From the City…

Tucson Development Center (TDC) Online, the City of Tucson's permitting system, will be temporarily unavailable for customers beginning Friday, Oct. 20, at 8 p.m., due to a system upgrade. TDC Online will again be fully operational and available to customers by 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23. The City of Tucson team will work diligently to enhance the permitting platform to give customers an even better experience. TDC Online is a self-service portal that provides customers with a complete online process. The system is a one-stop shop for customers seeking permits across Tucson. It provides customers transparency throughout the permitting process, with email notifications and a personal dashboard to track applications from submittal to issuance. Customers can make real-time payments, schedule inspections, and create templates for frequently used applications.
