The Blessing of the Animals will take place this coming Sunday, at 4:00 pm, in front of the Parish House. Get more details below.

Rector's Ramblings

The Honorable Brett Kavanaugh. Dr. Christine Blasey Ford. These two individuals have become the poster children of the brokenness of our political system. Both have been called victims in recent weeks, and both have been accused of lying. Both have been said to have been credible, and both have also been described in terms of how this confirmation process has potentially ruined their lives. What we call them, how we refer to them, and how we interpret the events of the last two weeks is often determined by what political tribe we belong to. Each side clearly sees what's going on, who's manipulating, grandstanding, and trying to use the process for their own gain. Each side assumes that everyone on the other side is ignoring the real facts for their own benefit. Truth and justice are so relative these days that it's unclear what we're left fighting for, except the one thing we've always fought for: power.

Winning elections is more about holding onto power than addressing the common good these days. Perhaps that's always been the case, but it's more obvious and damaging now than at any time in decades. We are short-sighted in so many ways, including in the political arena. We've chosen to tinker under the hood of our democratic republic so that we could get the results we wanted, often at the expense of how things would play out over the long term. Gerrymandering, for example, is largely to blame for the reality that our elected leaders don't work together to solve problems in bi-partisan ways like they did once upon a time. There's a reason that Senators and Representatives with the most leverage are those who have either announced their retirement or come from districts that are swing districts.

Blessing of the Animals - October 7, 2018AnimalBlessing

Join us this Sunday, October 7, at 4:00 pm, when Christ Church will celebrate the blessing of our animals. Please bring the important animals in your life, whether they're dogs, cats, horses, goats, chickens, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, reptiles or even bees, and come to this wonderful celebration  started by St. Francis many centuries ago.  We will gather outside of the Parish House for this special and joyful service and encourage you to bring your friends and neighbors!

X Church
X Church will return to the weekly line-up of Holy Eucharist worship services on Wednesday, October 17, at 6:30 pm, in the historic church. X Church is a service of quiet contemplation, reverence and praise that takes place every week. Join us for this time of peace and reflection in the middle of your busy week.

RenewalWorks

The singular emphasis on love of God and neighbor provides the foundation for RenewalWorks, a ministry in the Episcopal Church that focuses on spiritual growth by deepening love of God and neighbor in the lives of congregations, in the lives of ministries that animate those congregations, and in the lives of the individuals who bring life to those ministries.

We are using the RenewalWorks to evaluate our members and our congregation and make plans for the future.  The first step in this process is the congregational survey. Please take a few minutes out of your schedule to use the link below and answer questions about your spiritual life and your life at Christ Church. We will use this information with a team of parishioners to determine strategies and plans to improve our spiritual vitality. The link can be found here .  Each person in a household over the age of 16 is encouraged to take the survey. If this work sounds interesting to you, and you'd like to be a part of the parish RenewalWorks team, please email Father Tom at tom@ccfss.org.

Men's Study Group
The Men's Discussion Group, which meets on Wednesdays at 10:30 am in the Youth Room is currently reading  Our Towns: a 100,000 Mile Journey into the Heart of America , by James and Deborah Fallows.  " A vivid, surprising portrait of the civic and economic reinvention taking place in America, town by town and generally out of view of the national media. A realistically positive and provocative view of the country between its coasts.  Books are available in the church office for $21. Please contact Father Tom at  tom@ccfssi.org , for more information.

Conflict Training - Beginning October 11

While the majority of us prefer a congenial approach to a day's activities and generally do not seek out quarrels, conflict seems to be a fundamental element in our lives. Everyone is experienced in conflict management, whether we seek it out, simply respond to it when we encounter it, or actively try to avoid it. But just because we encounter conflict does not mean we are trained in how to handle it. Using scripture as a model for conflict transformation, we will explore how Jesus and  the apostles chose to address it. The core message of the scriptures is reconciliation and that is the goal of Christian conflict transformation and the theme of our learning.

Join the group to learn your preferred conflict response style and explore other ways to handle the inevitable bumps in the road. Get hands on, practical training in how to live in peace. The group will meet on Thursdays at 11:00 am, in the Parish Hall for five weeks beginning October 11. For more information, contact Mother Becky at  becky@ccfssi.org .

Wednesday Evening Bible Study Begins on October 17
Continuing on the theme of Spiritual Growth, the Fall Bible Study begins on Wednesday, October 17. The group will meet in the Parish House at 5:30 pm, so that anyone wishing to attend X Church in Christ Church at 6:30 pm may do so. The subject of study and discussion will be "Spiritual Discipleship". All are warmly welcome. Please contact Godfrey Draviam at 912-638-8747 if you would like more information.
