We want to give each of our Easter Seals ECI families a huge “THANK YOU” for participating in this year’s Family Outcomes Surveys. The HHSC ECI state office randomly selects families from each program annually and the selected families are sent a link to an online survey.

The purpose of the surveys is to determine how well ECI programs in Texas are doing at teaching families things like knowing their rights as families receiving services in an ECI program to understanding how the transition process works when a child leaves the program at the age of three years. The information gathered from the surveys is used to score programs how well the individual ECI programs are doing at the items surveyed.

The scores a program receives are then used to determine our overall scores that are reported on the HHSC ECI website. Last year our return rate for the surveys was less than 20%. This year our preliminary return rate is 67% with the state return rate of about 50%.

You are awesome in so many ways and we are so grateful to each of our families that took the time to complete the surveys! We also want to thank each of your service coordinators that provided you with the information about the surveys and helped locate the links in the inbox if needed.

Easter Seals ECI Families and Service Coordinators are the BEST! Thanks to all of you for the great job you did this year.

With gratitude,

Linda Tapia,

Executive Director

Spotlight Story -

Zoey & Sarita Romo

by Esai Romo

When my wife Clarke was nine weeks pregnant, she suffered a cardiac arrest and spent the next three months in the hospital. During that time a lot was unknown and the doctors at Methodist did a great job at helping my wife recover while also ensuring the babies needs were being met. For most of her pregnancy, Clarke had to re-learn how to walk, read, and write while also waiting for her memory to return. The Zoey and Sarita were born at 33 weeks and spent 17 days in the NICU.

We were referred to Easter Seals due to them being born premature and all the events leading up to their birth. Heather came out and has been like a second mom to the girls. She worked with us and gave us many tips on how to help the girls reach their milestones and did a fantastic job. She caught a flat spot early on that Zoey was developing due to her having torticollis and gave us tips on how to keep it from getting worse. Because of Heather’s help the flat spot went away and we did not need cranial remolding.

With the help of Heather and Easter Seals, Zoey and Sarita are meeting all their milestones and have graduated from the program. Heather will always hold a special place in our family’s journey.

UTSA BehaviorBuddy Study

UTSA is recruiting a new cohort for BehaviorBuddy, a free research project that helps caregivers teach young children with autism vital early communication skills. Using a mobile app and support from a Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), families learn strategies to build their child’s vocal communication in everyday settings.

What parents can expect:

  • Free guidance from a BCBA
  • Access to the BehaviorBuddy app
  • Flexible telehealth support on your schedule
  • Tools to reduce frustration and support communication at home

When to Cancel Therapy

Covid and many other contagious illnesses are going around in the San Antonio Community.

We want every child to get the most out of therapy. Sometimes the best way to help them (and keep everyone else healthy) is to take a rest day. Please inform your team and cancel if:

  • They have a fever of 100.4°F or higher.
  • They’ve had vomiting or diarrhea in the last 24 hours.
  • They’re coughing a lot, have a very sore throat, or a runny nose that makes it hard to participate.
  • They’ve been diagnosed with something contagious (like the flu, strep throat, pink eye, or COVID-19).
  • They have a rash and you’re not sure what’s causing it.
  • They’re just not feeling well enough to join in and benefit from therapy.

Telehealth is available at your discretion if your child is well enough for therapy, but experiencing symptoms where it's best to keep therapists from entering the home.

If your child is not well enough for any type of therapy, please cancel with your therapist. Remember, when we leave your home, we go to see other children and families.

Let's all work together to keep everyone as healthy as possible.
