Home Show Volunteer Opportunities
The SAHBA Fall Home Show is just around the corner on October 6-8, and with it comes the opportunity to see hundreds of exhibitors and thousands of guests. The Home Show exhibitors tell us repeatedly that the volunteer team is one of the reasons the SAHBA show is one of their favorites. We invite you to join us to meet new people and lend a hand at this key SAHBA event.
Volunteers will receive a T-shirt, food tickets, and additional home show entry tickets for friends and family - not to mention unlimited free access to the Show throughout the weekend!
Check out the opportunities and sign up today through Signup Genius!

Pygmy Owl Briefing
This week, SAHBA members had an opportunity to hear from Supervisory Biologist Scott Richardson of the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Program Manager of Conservation Science (click here for presentation), Jenny Neely with Pima County (click here for presentation) about the implications of the recent listing of the Pygmy Owl as a Threatened Species. The event focused on providing background information on the justification for the listing decision and how landowners in Pima County can “opt-in” to the Multi-Species Conservation Plan to receive protection from incidental taking of an owl during development. Please contact David Godlewski at david@sahba.org if you have any questions.

Mayoral Candidate Forum
The Tucson Business Alliance (of which SAHBA is a member) hosted a forum this week for candidates running for the Mayor of Tucson: Mayor Regina Romero (D), Ed Ackerly (I), and JL Wittenbraker (R). The candidates provided their perspectives on four core categories: Public Safety, Infrastructure, Housing, and Economic Prosperity.

Technical Committee Re-Cap
SAHBA Members were offered updates on multiple issues facing the industry at the September Tech Committee Meeting. Pima County staff provided a summary of changes found on the final draft of the update to the Bufferyard & Screening Requirements Manual and also gave an overview of the new online permitting process. Members heard more details from the Town of Sahuarita on the new sidewalk right-of-way permit implementation. Representatives from Tucson Water discussed the upcoming changes to the requirements for design standard illustrations in plans. Other topics included the proposed changes to the Oro Valley Private Area Recreation requirements, the new permitting lanes in the City of Tucson, which are designed to increase efficiency, and an update on the One Water 2100 Plan. SAHBA members are welcome to join the Tech Committee for detailed conversations with local municipality officials and in-depth discussions on the most pressing issues before the industry. The Tech Committee meets on the third Tuesday of each month. Please contact ginger@sahba.org if you would like to be included in the next meeting.

PC Screening & Bufferyard Design Manual Moves Forward
SAHBA members have provided significant input on the update to the Pima County Screening and Bufferyard Design Manual. The Final Draft, dated August 30, 2023, can be found here and was approved by the Planning & Zoning Commission at their meeting on September 27. The Manual will move forward to the Board of Supervisors for approval at a date not yet set. SAHBA remains engaged with County staff to work towards a final product that limits the additional costs of compliance with new regulations.

Oro Valley Private Recreation Area Requirements
SAHBA hosted another stakeholder meeting with Oro Valley staff earlier this week to discuss the more onerous revisions to the Oro Valley Private Recreation Area requirements. This proposed update to the zoning code is scheduled to be before the Oro Valley Town Council on October 18. SAHBA will continue to work with the staff and elected officials in Oro Valley to mitigate the high costs of implementing these proposed changes that will heavily impact both lot supply and affordability in the Town.
