From the Judge's Bench

Organizations belonging to Crime Stoppers USA occasionally have internal disagreement which occasionally have board members who become engaged in hostilities that interfere with the day to day operations of the program. When, or preferable before it reaches this point, Crime Stoppers USA can become involved in an effort to assist in the resolution of such disputes.

A few days ago, a member of one Crime Stoppers board filed a lawsuit in a state district court against the Crime Stoppers corporate entity and its board members. Board members were additionally sued in their “individual capacity.” A deputy sheriff who served as a liaison between Crime Stoppers and the Sheriff’s Office was also sued in his “individual capacity”. This is perhaps the ugliest “shareholder” suit in the history of Crime Stoppers.

As a member benefit, Crime Stoppers USA can help your program resolve matters. CSUSA can have a team to meet with and informally mediate a disposition that is in the best interest of Crime Stoppers. Thanks to video conferencing, this can be done quite effectively and efficiently at no cost. Don’t be a plaintiff. Don’t be a defendant.

BEST PRACTICES

FOR YOUR CS PROGRAM

Having liability insurance for your Crime Stoppers Program is a Best Practice as it can save you a lot of money and heartache if your program experiences loss.

Crime Stoppers USA has become acquainted with Kevin Cothron from the Nonprofit Insurance Alliance at the 2023 CSUSA Conference. The Alliance can answer any questions you have and then refer you to an Insurance Agency is your area that specializes in Nonprofit Insurance – which is very important.

INSURANCE FOR YOUR NON-PROFIT

Learning about insurance for nonprofits and finding the right coverages for your operations can be overwhelming.

Nonprofits Insurance Alliance (NIA) via TCG Insurance Programs has created a guide to answer your most frequently asked questions about insurance available to nonprofits.

What is insurance?

Insurance is one way to protect your organization from financial loss.

Although insurance doesn’t remove the risk, insurance limits the financial impact of any insurable risk to the cost of your insurance premium and any deductibles or coinsurance.

This is a way of transferring risk away from your organization.

What is risk?

Risk is the potential for a loss to take place. Below are examples of insurable losses:

  • Injuries to your staff, volunteers, the people you serve, or to the public.
  • Damage to your property or the property of others.
  • Theft/fraud
  • Monetary damages that others have caused and for which you may be wholly or partially responsible

What is coverage?

Coverage is the extent of risk to which your insurance applies.

It is important to work with a qualified insurance broker that specializes in nonprofits to review your unique exposures and determine what types of insurance you need to carry, as well as which might be a good idea to carry.

Dear Crime Stoppers programs,

Get ready for the 2024 Crime Stoppers USA National Training Conference!

This year, we are excited to partner with our host, Central Indiana Crime Stoppers, for a weekend full of excellent training and valuable networking opportunities. Our conference committee is working diligently to bring you knowledgeable speakers to discuss relevant topics that will directly impact your program.

Thank you to our host program for lining up an evening at one of America’s Top AAA ballparks! We’ll enjoy a pre-game picnic and box seats at Victory Field as the Indianapolis Indians take on the Rochester Red Wings.

Here are just a few quotes from last year’s conference surveys:

  • “As a first-time conference go-er this was exceptional and I learned a lot.”

  • “Exceeded expectations.”

  • “This was SO helpful. Our CS program needs a boost (badly) and that is why I’m at this conference. This session provided exactly the kind of information I was hoping to learn.”

  •  “Overloaded with new ideas. Thank you.”

Dale Needleman, Board President of Central Indiana Crime Stoppers sends a warm welcome, “Indianapolis is a beautiful city to host the conference and the time of year will be perfect for being outside to visit the ballpark, canal walk, museums, and any other outdoor activities. The hotel is right downtown close to all facilities. We are looking forward to a great event! Please join us in Indy!”

On behalf of the CSUSA Conference Committee, we hope to see you there!

Julie Lopez

2024 Conference Chair
