Relieve your pain with Acupuncture

Can those needles relieve pain, really?!

They sure can

The Grace Study wants to know how well acupuncture can relieve your pain. (This ancient Chinese therapy has been used to relieve pain since days of old.) How well your pain is relieved, is unique to you. In general, the pain relieving capacity of acupuncture increases during the period of active use.

The Grace Study is one of only two studies in the country recruiting persons with Sickle Cell Anemia to study the benefits of acupuncture for pain relief. If you are assigned to an acupuncture group, you will receive 10 free sessions. This can be an addition to your pain regimen and will not compete with or prevent you from receiving adequate care.

Your participation aids the study of pain therapies for people with Sickle Cell.

See the flyer below for details and contact information

Stay Tuned For Information on These Upcoming Surveys:

  • Sickle Cell and Menstruation
  • Sickle Cell and Menopause

If you have sickle cell disease, the course of your monthly period may not be the same as that of the average person. When you go through menopause, it may be at an earlier age than persons who do not have sickle cell disease. Researchers want to document these differences, to inform girls and women of what differences may be expected. Conditions surrounding your period and reproductive organs, may have a greater effect on you than other people.

Pool and Open Waters Safety Tips

Look Before You Leap

  • Avoid health issues from using swimming pools or swimming in open waters.
  • Be your own inspector : check out the pools health inspection record with your state or local health department
  • Be observant and make a quick assessment
  • Look Around what do you see?

Is the water cloudy? (It shouldn’t be.)

Cloudy water could indicate too much bacteria for safe swimming. You could become sick.

Can you see clearly to the bottom of the pool?

(You should be able to, this means chemicals in the water that kill germs are not exhausted)

Are there open chemicals around?

Inform pool staff so they may remove them.

Are there visible pipes feeding water into the pool or ocean? (Warning. Danger sign.) Make your local health department aware of this and don’t risk it. Swim in a safer place. This could be a sign of dumping harmful materials in the water that can make you sick.

Are there lifeguards? (There should always be a lifeguard.)

Even expert swimmers have trouble in water sometimes. Everyone needs some around who can assist if they experience difficulty in the water.

Always wear the proper life vests when boating or learning to swim. Do not use flotation toys as a substitute.

Unseen Risks

What you don’’t see can make you sick. Pools may have chlorine in the water and you may detect the odor and think the water is safe. From time to time

pools have outbreaks caused by too little chlorine or risky behavior from people who visit the pool. Ignoring the health and safety of other pool users can cause these outbreaks and make many people sick. People who have illness that make their immune systems weaker can become very sick.

Let’s All Stay Well and Enjoy the Summer!

How You Can Help

Think of others and protect their health as well as yours.

  • Rise your body before entering the pool.
  • This helps a lot to keep pool bacteria at lower levels.
  • Chorine kills germs and viruses. but takes more time under certain circumstances.
  • Certain bacteria can stay in the water for up to seven days.
  • Don’t think chlorine will keep others safe, if you have a wound or a contagious health condition.
  • Ask your doctor when it is safe to return to the pool if you have had diarrhea, or respiratory illnesses such as the flu, pneumonia, or covid.
  • Feeling better does not mean it’s safe yet.
  • Don’’t go into a pool with open wounds.
  • Do not go into a pool if you have, or have recently had diarrhea
  • The pool is not a toilet
  • Never urinate in the water.
  • Do not swallow pool water
