Look Before You Leap
-
Avoid health issues from using swimming pools or swimming in open waters.
-
Be your own inspector : check out the pools health inspection record with your state or local health department
-
Be observant and make a quick assessment
- Look Around what do you see?
Is the water cloudy? (It shouldn’t be.)
Cloudy water could indicate too much bacteria for safe swimming. You could become sick.
Can you see clearly to the bottom of the pool?
(You should be able to, this means chemicals in the water that kill germs are not exhausted)
Are there open chemicals around?
Inform pool staff so they may remove them.
Are there visible pipes feeding water into the pool or ocean? (Warning. Danger sign.) Make your local health department aware of this and don’t risk it. Swim in a safer place. This could be a sign of dumping harmful materials in the water that can make you sick.
Are there lifeguards? (There should always be a lifeguard.)
Even expert swimmers have trouble in water sometimes. Everyone needs some around who can assist if they experience difficulty in the water.
Always wear the proper life vests when boating or learning to swim. Do not use flotation toys as a substitute.
