Rector's Ramblings

One of my favorite TV shows of the last decade was AMC's Mad Men. The period show spanned the entirety of the 1960's, showcasing the birth of the world of the high-powered advertising culture that sprung up on New York's Madison (Mad in Mad Men) Avenue. Watching the show was like entering into a different place and time. Much like Downton Abbey captured England's dress, style, and mindsets of the early part of the 20th  century, Mad Men focused on a time of dramatic change in our country with laser focus. The show won awards for its authenticity when it came to costumes and history.

Part of what made the show interesting was the regular cringe-worthy realizations of life in the 1960's and how it has (or hasn't) changed. We see smoking everywhere, for example, with dubious claims about its benefits and dangers. There is a scene where a child plays with a plastic bag on her head, causing the mother to call after her, "just don't strangle yourself to death!" But the most persistent revisited theme surrounded the interaction between men and women. At the start of the series, women were only able to be secretaries. The men in the office regularly harassed and chased the women, and worse.

Worship

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us this fall for one of the many worship opportunities we're offering at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, we offer the Rite II Eucharist service at St. Ignatius Chapel on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service, followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for our younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship takes place in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm in Christ Church.

X Church has resumed for the season. Please join us on Wednesdays, at 6:30 pm, for this wonderful time of pause and reflection in the middle of the week. There are also special worship services planned throughout the season, that you won't want to miss. To see the schedule for fall worship and read about all the programs and activities happening at Christ Church, click here.

All Saints' Sunday - November 5, 2017
We are collecting names for the All Saints Book of Remembrance. The book will be available at each of the services between now and November 5th. If you would like to have the name of someone who has passed away since last year's All Saints' Day services read during this year's services, please be sure to add his or her name to the book.

Experience being the key word, one has to be in one of these services to truly know how special they are to many. Join us on November 12th at 6:00 pm so you, too, can recharge your spirit then go in peace to love and serve!

Christmas at Sea
It's hard to believe, but Christmas is less than 10 weeks away! As much as we hate to rush the season, it's important to start thinking of those who need help and support during the holidays.

One group with whom Christ Church actively collaborates, is the International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

All Souls' Day Celebration*AllSouls

Our Choristers and Trebles work hard decorating Sugar Skull decorations for Dia de los Muertos

Please join us on Thursday, November 2nd, at Christ Church, as we celebrate All Souls' Day in the Mexican tradition, complete with food from Tio Taco, activities for families and children, Evensong, (featuring the Christ Church Choir and Trebles) and a special performance by organist Jillian Gardner.  (Read more about Jillian here .)

4:30-5:30 Parish Hall
Bring a photo of a deceased loved one (human or not human) that you'd like to display on our Day of the Dead Altar** in the Parish Hall. The altar in the Parish House will be decorated in Day of the Dead fashion with candles, sugar skull faces, flowers, and more. Munch on goodies from Tia Taco and enjoy inter-generational fellowship!

5:30 Choral Evensong and Organ Recital in Christ Church
The Christ Church Choir and Trebles will offer Choral Evensong (including a choral setting of the  Phos Hilaron  and  Anglican Chant ), followed by a fun organ recital by Jillian Garner, a fabulous young artist voted one of the top talents in the country.

For more information about this event, please contact Kathleen Turner at [email protected].

*In Mexico, celebrations for el Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, take place on our All Souls' Day, when families visit cemeteries to honor their ancestors. Since we are surrounded by a cemetery, it is most fitting to celebrate this day at Christ Church, Frederica.

** Everything on an altar has special meaning:
- Dogs were believed to guide the ancestral spirits to their final resting place in the afterlife. Candles represent fire and are a light guiding them back to visit the land of the living.
- Sugar skulls represent death and the sweetness of life.
- Delicately decorated tissue paper represents wind and the fragility of life.
- Monarch butterflies, which migrate to Mexico each fall, were believed to be the spirits of the ancestors coming to visit.

HartYoga is the unique hybrid brand and style of yoga created by John Hartland. It combines Kundalini, Restorative, Chakra and Vinyasa styles of yoga. The mission is to make yoga accessible to everyone. Classes typically include breath work, meditation, poses and some chanting to music. 500th Anniversary of the Reformation - October 29, 0217
The Rev. Bonnie Lanyi and The Rev. Kay Yates

The community is invited to join in their Reformation 500 celebration, which will feature special music with a combined choir and guest musicians. Christ Church Master Plan - Input NeededMasterPlanSurvey

Your Vestry is eager to get feedback from the congregation about the Christ Church Master Plan. Our Town Hall meetings scheduled for September were preempted by Hurricane Irma, but we think we can learn a lot from a simple survey.

If you are not familiar with the Master Plan, you will want to familiarize yourself with it before responding to the survey. You can see an executive summary of the plan by clicking   here

Please take time, as soon as possible, to fill out our brief survey by clicking on the link below:

A few people have had difficulties logging in to the survey.  If you can't get the page to load, try cutting and pasting the website from the email into your browser's address bar.  Also, if you find that it isn't saving your answers as you take the quiz, try clicking "ok" when it pops up after each question before scrolling down. It may also be a cookie setting on your browser. You might try using another browser. If all else fails, come to the office for a paper copy! Please get survey responses in as soon as possible.
