IN THIS ISSUE
The next few weeks at Christ Church are packed with special events like  Souper Sunday, the All Hallows' Eve Family Fun Fest and the All Souls' Day Celebration and Evensong. Mark your calendar for these events and invite friends and family to join us at Christ Church!

Rector's Ramblings

I am so pleased that X Church has started back up.  We take the summers off (with a little extra on each end) because of temperature and light. The candle-lit atmosphere, or lack there of, when the sun stays up later, has a negative impact on the ambience of the service. Similarly, running the air conditioning prevents us from using real candles in the candelabras or using incense; neither works well with our industrial strength blowers. So, now that it has cooled off and is darker in the evenings, the service is back in full swing.

Because of the slower pace, the intentional silences, and the whole ethos of X Church, I find it to be the service I can most readily worship in as a presider. That may not make sense to some, but those of us who preside in worship often find it hard to participate fully in the worship itself for a host of reasons. Leading and participating are two different spiritual acts, and the latter is vitally important for a healthy spiritual life. As such, I find that participating in X Church feeds my soul more consistently than Sunday mornings - which can also feed my soul, but not as easily or as well, on average.

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us this fall for one of the many worship opportunities we're offering at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, we offer the Rite II Eucharist service at St. Ignatius Chapel on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service, followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for our younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship takes place in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm in Christ Church.

X Church has resumed for the season. Please join us on Wednesdays, at 6:30 pm, for this wonderful time of pause and reflection in the middle of the week. There are also special worship services planned throughout the season, that you won't want to miss. To see the schedule for fall worship and read about all the programs and activities happening at Christ Church, click here.

All Saints' Sunday - November 5, 2017
We are collecting names for the All Saints Book of Remembrance. The book will be available at each of the services between now and November 5th. If you would like to have the name of someone who has passed away since last year's All Saints' Day services read during this year's services, please be sure to add his or her name to the book.

Be Our Light in the Darkness

By John La Boone

"Then Jesus rebuked the demon and it came out of him, and the boy was healed that very hour."
                                                          - Matthew 17:18

As Episcopalians we are familiar with the orders of bishops, priests and deacons, which historically have been called the major orders or holy orders. But for most of our church history there were also these minor orders (in descending order): acolyte, lector, exorcist and porter. Originally, if you wanted to become a priest you would start at the bottom and work your way up through the minor orders first. When the English Church was reformed in the 16th century, the minor orders were officially done away with as ordained ministries, but they have been an important part of our religious and cultural heritage for most of the time that Christianity has existed.

The minor orders did not really go away for good in Anglicanism. Today we see modern versions of these important jobs in various lay ministries. Every Sunday we see acolytes functioning in our church services by carrying the cross and torches, administering the chalice and assisting the clergy in other ways. We have lay readers and lectors reading our Bible lessons and the prayers of the people, or leading the Daily Office. Porters evolved into sextons and thank goodness we still have them performing a multitude of important duties. But what about exorcists - what are they and do we still have them? Yes, we do.

Christmas at Sea
It's hard to believe, but Christmas is less than 10 weeks away! As much as we hate to rush the season, it's important to start thinking of those who need help and support during the holidays.

One group with whom Christ Church actively collaborates, is the International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.
Fellowship

500th Anniversary of the Reformation - October 29, 0217
The Rev. Bonnie Lanyi and The Rev. Kay Yates
This year Lutherans celebrate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Protestant Reformation, spurred by Martin Luther's nailing of the 95 theses to the cathedral doors in Wittenberg. (Read more here.)
To help commemorate and celebrate this milestone, the congregations of Lord of Life and St. James Lutheran Churches will come together on Sunday, October 29, 2017, for a joint worship service and celebration at 7:00 pm, at Lord of Life, on St. Simons Island. The community is invited to join in their Reformation 500 celebration, which will feature special music with a combined choir and guest musicians. The evening will end with dessert and coffee in the Fellowship Hall. Lord of Life Lutheran Church is located at 2801 Frederica Road.

All Souls' Day Celebration*AllSouls

Our Choristers and Trebles work hard decorating Sugar Skull decorations for Dia de los Muertos

Please join us on Thursday, November 2nd, at Christ Church, as we celebrate All Souls' Day in the Mexican tradition, complete with food from Tio Taco, activities for families and children, Evensong, (featuring the Christ Church Choir and Trebles) and a special performance by organist Jillian Gardner.  (Read more about Jillian here .)

4:30-5:30 Parish Hall
Bring a photo of a deceased loved one (human or not human) that you'd like to display on our Day of the Dead Altar** in the Parish Hall. The altar in the Parish House will be decorated in Day of the Dead fashion with candles, sugar skull faces, flowers, and more. Munch on goodies from Tia Taco and enjoy inter-generational fellowship!

5:30 Choral Evensong and Organ Recital in Christ Church
The Christ Church Choir and Trebles will offer Choral Evensong (including a choral setting of the  Phos Hilaron  and  Anglican Chant ), followed by a fun organ recital by Jillian Garner, a fabulous young artist voted one of the top talents in the country.

For more information about this event, please contact Kathleen Turner at kathleen@ccfssi.org.

*In Mexico, celebrations for el Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, take place on our All Souls' Day, when families visit cemeteries to honor their ancestors. Since we are surrounded by a cemetery, it is most fitting to celebrate this day at Christ Church, Frederica.

** Everything on an altar has special meaning:
- Dogs were believed to guide the ancestral spirits to their final resting place in the afterlife. Candles represent fire and are a light guiding them back to visit the land of the living.
- Sugar skulls represent death and the sweetness of life.
- Delicately decorated tissue paper represents wind and the fragility of life.
- Monarch butterflies, which migrate to Mexico each fall, were believed to be the spirits of the ancestors coming to visit.

Community Thanksgiving Service to be Held at Christ Church

Christ Church will be hosting the community Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 19th, at 4:00 pm in the Christ Church Parish Hall. HartYoga has come to Christ Church!

John Hartland of HartYoga is offering a weekly class at Christ Church on Mondays at  11:00 am . The class meets in the Parish Hall. John offers several classes around the island and is excellent.  Donations are accepted. (For example, when he offers his classes at Holy Nativity folks give a $10 donation).

HartYoga is the unique hybrid brand and style of yoga created by John Hartland. It combines Kundalini, Restorative, Chakra and Vinyasa styles of yoga.
