Rector's Ramblings

This week The Atlanta Journal Constitution noted that one of the "31 Most Haunted Places in America" is right here in Georgia. It is none other than Christ Church, Frederica, as it turns out. Now, the source of the list, an annotated Google Map that has been viewed 400,000 times and counting, wishes to remain anonymous, so we don't know why we were included or how we managed to make the list. Not that it matters. I find it interesting that our local legends have gotten that far, but I suppose I shouldn't really be surprised. Christ Church, I am often reminded, is known well beyond its cemetery walls.

With All Saints being this week, preceded of course by All Hallows Eve, this designation gives rise to two reflections. First, on the jumble of ideas surrounding Halloween, All Saints, All Souls, and hauntings, and second, with regard to what we're known for. I ultimately think the two can be related, in a roundabout way, although we don't necessarily think that way on a regular basis.

Worship

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us for one of the many worship opportunities we offer at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, a Rite II Eucharist service takes place at St. Ignatius Chapel, on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service; followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship is celebrated in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm and X Church takes place at 6:30 pm in Christ Church.

There are also special worship services planned throughout the season, that you won't want to miss. To see the schedule for fall worship and read about all the programs and activities happening at Christ Church, click here.

Ingathering
The Annual Stewardship Campaign is coming to a close. We will have the Ingathering on Saturday, November 11th and Sunday, November 12th . If you haven't sent your pledge card in to the office, we encourage you to bring it with you to worship this weekend, when we will bring the pledge cards and place them on the altar. If you do not have a pledge card, one will be available for you at church.

EYC  Rooted and Relevant - November 12th

Join our youth for the monthly Rooted and Relevant Holy Eucharist celebration. This special service provides a worship experience full of spirit, community and love. "Experience" being the key word, one has to be in one of these services to truly know how spiritually enriching they are to many. The next service is Sunday, November 12th at 6:00 pm, in the Parish Hall.

Adult Sunday Class - The New Testament
The Adult Sunday morning Class is currently doing a 24-week series from The Great Courses lectures on the New Testament. The Class meets from 10:30 to 11:15 am each week in the Parish Hall and the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown is the facilitator and teacher for the Class. The New Testament course promises to be an inspiring and educational event. Everyone is welcome!

Convictions Book Study
The eleven week study based on the book,  Convictions - How I Learned What Mattered Most , by Marcus Borg, continues in October on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm. Marcus Borg contends that Christians in America are at their best when they focus on hope and transformation, and return to what really matters most - bringing to earth the kingdom of God Jesus talked about and transforming our relationships with one another. The class is being  led by the Christ Church clergy team.

Outreach

Martha's Guild
Martha's Guild is looking for some new members. Many of our long time members who have served so well are unable to do so now.  The members of Martha's Guild prepare and serve food at receptions for the bereaved families and friends of those whose funerals are held at Christ Church.   It is a gift of love and not a difficult task.  Please call 912-638-2717 if you would like to be a part of this ministry.  Angie Burns will be happy to supply details.

Donate Clothing to the STAR Foundation
As you change over to your winter clothing, think about bringing any gently used women's clothing or accessories which you are no longer using to the box in the parish hall marked "Donation Box ECW." The ECW will donate the clothes to the STAR Foundation of Brunswick. In keeping with the ECW's focus on women and children, STAR teaches computer skills, financial literacy and life skills training to disadvantaged women. The donated clothing helps students present a professional image during job interviews and in their workplaces. Contact Klara Faulk at [email protected] for more information.

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

We will be collecting non-perishable foods for Thanksgiving food baskets for 23 needy families in our community on Saturday, Nov. 11; Sunday, Nov. 12; Saturday, Nov. 18 and Sunday, Nov. 19 at St. Ignatius Chapel and Christ Church, Frederica. Monetary donations are welcome, too. On Monday, November 20th, all are invited to help assemble the food baskets in the Parish Hall. Contact Jeannie Wade at  [email protected] or at 912- 638-6462   for more information.

Join us for a day of fun and golf at the Sea Island Retreat Golf Course, on Saturday, December 2nd  at 9:00 am! This four-person scramble, best ball is open to everyone and will create a truly spectacular golf experience. It will also present the opportunity to meet, support and change the lives of women at the Grace House. The cost is $100 per person and $400 per team and this includes: 18 Holes of golf with cart, a bag lunch delivered during the event and many prizes. This will be a fund raiser with prizes, silent auction and good times! Golfers will play a "Scramble" and can sign up individually or to a specific three or foursome. For more information, contact the Rev. Tommy Townsend at 770-616-4791.

Christmas at Sea
It's hard to believe, but Christmas is less than 10 weeks away! As much as we hate to rush the season, it's important to start thinking of those who need help and support during the holidays.

One group with whom Christ Church actively collaborates, is the International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.
HomeLife on Glynco is Looking for Volunteers
HomeLife on Glynco is a personal care home in Brunswick, that provides assisted living, as well as memory care for residents. They are currently in need of volunteers to help with activities such as  singing, playing the piano, bingo, arts and crafts and decorating for the holidays. If you are interested in helping, please contact Kay Crockett, at 912-242-6586 for more information.

All Hallows' Eve Family Fun Fest

The All Hallows' Eve Family Fun Fest on Monday, October 30th, was an exciting adventure for our many young visitors, their parents and so many of our Christ Church families! Face painting, hay rides, hot dog eating, cookie decorating, magic tricks and trips down the haunted hallway all added to a terrific evening of fun for all who were there! Many thanks to all who worked so hard to make the evening happen and to those who came and enjoyed the festivities! To see more pictures of all the fun, click  here.

All Souls' Day Celebration*AllSouls

Please join us on Thursday, November 2nd, at Christ Church, as we celebrate All Souls' Day in the Mexican tradition, complete with food from Tio Taco, activities for families and children, Evensong, (featuring the Christ Church Choir and Trebles) and a special performance by organist Jillian Gardner.

4:30-5:30 Parish Hall
Bring a photo of a deceased loved one (human or not human) that you'd like to display on our Day of the Dead Altar** in the Parish Hall. The altar in the Parish House will be decorated in Day of the Dead fashion with candles, sugar skull faces, flowers, and more. Munch on goodies from Tia Taco and enjoy inter-generational fellowship!

5:30 Choral Evensong and Organ Recital in Christ Church
The Christ Church Choir and Trebles will offer Choral Evensong (including a choral setting of the  Phos Hilaron  and  Anglican Chant ), followed by a fun organ recital by Jillian Garner, a fabulous young artist voted one of the top talents in the country. Read more about Jillian here. Listen to a sample of light-hearted organ music here.

For more information about this event, please contact Kathleen Turner at [email protected].

*In Mexico, celebrations for el Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, take place on our All Souls' Day, when families visit cemeteries to honor their ancestors. Since we are surrounded by a cemetery, it is most fitting to celebrate this day at Christ Church, Frederica.

** Everything on an altar has special meaning:
- Dogs were believed to guide the ancestral spirits to their final resting place in the afterlife. Candles represent fire and are a light guiding them back to visit the land of the living.
- Sugar skulls represent death and the sweetness of life.
- Delicately decorated tissue paper represents wind and the fragility of life.
- Monarch butterflies, which migrate to Mexico each fall, were believed to be the spirits of the ancestors coming to visit.

Community Thanksgiving Service to be Held at Christ Church

Christ Church will be hosting the community Thanksgiving service on Sunday, November 19th, at 4:00 pm in the Christ Church Parish Hall. This is a special time of worship that includes hymns, prayers, Old and New Testament readings, a sermon and an offering that will benefit those who are hungry in our community.

Thank you!

Christ Church Staff honored our Front Desk Volunteers, thanking them for their faithful service welcoming visitors, answering phones and helping staff with a myriad of tasks. Special thanks go to Pat Vinton for her leadership and organization!  A tasty lunch from Halyards and a musical parody written by Fr. Tom and sung by the Staff rounded out a lovely time to thank these gals and guys who lovingly serve all of us.

HartYoga has come to Christ Church!
John Hartland of HartYoga is offering a weekly class at Christ Church on Mondays at  11:00 am . The class meets in the Parish Hall. John offers several classes around the island and is excellent.  Donations are accepted. (For example, when he offers his classes at Holy Nativity folks give a $10 donation).  For more information, contact Kathleen Turner at [email protected]

Christ Church Master Plan - Input NeededMasterPlanSurvey

Your Vestry is eager to get feedback from the congregation about the Christ Church Master Plan. Our Town Hall meetings scheduled for September were preempted by Hurricane Irma, but we think we can learn a lot from a simple survey.

If you are not familiar with the Master Plan, you will want to familiarize yourself with it before responding to the survey. You can see an executive summary of the plan by clicking   here

Please take time, as soon as possible, to fill out our brief survey by clicking on the link below:

A few people have had difficulties logging in to the survey.  If you can't get the page to load, try cutting and pasting the website from the email into your browser's address bar.  Also, if you find that it isn't saving your answers as you take the quiz, try clicking "ok" when it pops up after each question before scrolling down. It may also be a cookie setting on your browser. You might try using another browser. If all else fails, come to the office for a paper copy! Please get survey responses in as soon as possible.
