Rector's Ramblings

I recently finished up a five-wedding streak; five weddings, five Saturdays in a row. I did the premarital counseling for all five couples, one of my favorite parts of doing weddings, which meant that over the last few months, I've spent hours and hours talking with young, energetic couples who are madly in love with each other. Let me tell you, it's a great way to spend some time. I find that sessions with couples preparing for marriage is one of the forms of ministry that feeds me while I do it. So much of what we do takes energy away for one reason or another, so I relish the things that energize me at the same time I'm engaging in them.

There's a simple reason for this, I've decided. Couples who are getting married are undeniably hopeful and positive. There have been few exceptions to that over the years. Sitting down with two people who are focused on their future - their long-term future, full of hope and idealism about their marriage and their lives, is a lot of fun. The cynic reading this would say young couples are naïve, and point out that perhaps life just hasn't set in yet. And that may be true; weren't we all a bit naïve when we were young? Weren't we all a little idealistic about marriage back at the start? Of course we were, and there's nothing wrong with that. If we only thought about the challenges and the failures that might be on the horizon, we wouldn't do much of anything. Instead, marriage is about capitalizing on the love and the positive moments, in order to traverse through the hard times more easily.

Lenten Meditation Series - Writers Needed
For four years, during 2011 - 2014, the parishioners of Christ Church produced our own collections of daily meditations for Lent based on the daily office lectionary Bible readings. Our publication was closely modeled on the  Forward Day by Day devotional booklets that have been so popular in The Episcopal Church since 1935. After a few years' hiatus, we are going to revive that ministry for Lent 2018. There will be some modifications but the concept is still the same. Each day a parishioner will offer a short, original reflection based on one of the assigned Bible readings for that day. The meditations will be delivered to all parishioners by daily emails. For anyone not using email, written copies can be provided on request. Using this devotional resource, we can all take a journey through Lent together as a parish family.

Outreach

Backpack Buddies Packing in December
On Tuesday, December 5th, at 1:00 pm, the Backpack Buddies will be back in action in the Parish Hall, filling bags for their young buddies and helping bring some cheer to their holidays! Please join them on the assembly line! For more information, contact Susan Shipman at [email protected].

Angel Tree for Morningstar Children
The Angel Tree will be back this year and will soon be set up in the Parish Hall. Simply stop by and choose an angel! This year we are helping the children of Morningstar feel the spirit of Christmas by gifting them with one wish from their Christmas list. Please return wrapped gifts with the angel affixed to the outside, to the Parish Hall by Friday, December 15. Contact Donna Purdy at [email protected] for more information.

Parents' Day Out - Friday, December 22nd

Christ Church is offering a Parents' Day Out on Friday, Dec. 22nd, from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm, so parents of children 12 and under have an opportunity for last minute Christmas errands. Parents may spend time with their children at the church during this event as well. The day will include lunch, snacks, games, and more! Please contact the church office at 912-638-8683 to sign up your children for this event.

Martha's Guild
Martha's Guild is looking for some new members. Many of our long time members who have served so well are unable to do so now.  The members of Martha's Guild prepare and serve food at receptions for the bereaved families and friends of those whose funerals are held at Christ Church.   It is a gift of love and not a difficult task.  Please call 912-638-2717 if you would like to be a part of this ministry.  Angie Burns will be happy to supply details.

Christmas at Sea
We live in a seaport district and Christ Church actively collaborates with the local International Seafarers Center, which ministers to seafarers from all over the planet. Most of us are blessed with family and friends during the holidays, but Christmas can be a lonely time for seafarers. Every year during the season of Christmas, the International Seafarers' Center spreads the love of Christ through their Christmas at Sea program. About 1500 seafarers travel through the port of Brunswick from Thanksgiving to January 7th and the Center hopes to give every seafarer a Christmas present.

If you'd like to be part of this ministry, it's as easy as filling a shoebox with 12 - 15 item from the list found here, wrapping the box in holiday paper and bringing it to either the church office in the Parish Hall, or to the International Seafarers Center, at 307 Newcastle Street in Brunswick.

Vestry Nominations
Nominations are open for the 2018 vestry election. This year's nominating committee is comprised of the outgoing vestry members: Nancy Stoddard, Susan Shipman, Gene Rackley, Scott McQuade and two previous senior wardens of the parish: Clif Jones and Ed Turner. Along with Fr. Tom, these six individuals will put together the slate of nominees for election at the annual meeting on January 28, 2018. Nominations may be made to any member of the committee between now and December 23rd.

Fr. Tom is looking for a volunteer to help catalog and organize his library. The process involves using a piece of software (provided) and a smart phone (can be a personal phone or Fr. Tom's). The individual who helps must be comfortable with computers and smart phones; library experience is a plus, but not required. If you think you have the time and interest to help with this project, please contact Fr. Tom at  [email protected]  to discuss the particulars.

Ushers Needed

An Interfaith Journey to the Holy Lands: Relationship, Understanding, and Community Harmony

Join Rabbi Rachel Bregman, Rev. Alan Dyer, and Rev. Tom Purdy as they lead an interfaith journey to the Holy Land with Medji Tours in June 2019. This once in a lifetime trip aims to build relationships across cultural and religious lines in our community by exploring together the shared roots of our traditions in Israel and Jordan. Additionally, this interfaith journey hopes to begin a longer-term process of continuing to form relationships, deepen understanding, and build community across other faith organizations in Glynn County, Georgia upon our return. This trip is open to any and all who would like to participate in this holy work. For more information, click here.
