Rector's Ramblings

Last week I had to miss the Community Seder in order to attend Middle School Orientation with Eva. We didn't get notice until Monday of that week that orientation was being offered, but once the notice came, I knew that's where I needed to be. Middle School is a big deal. For rising fifth graders, and also for their parents. I honestly don't know who is more apprehensive about Middle School. Eva or me. This is on par with the start of kindergarten; the first time you let them go all day to big kid school and recognize they are growing up. Middle School is the next level, although admittedly not the last.

Part of my apprehension is that Middle School was the worst part of my educational experience. My growth spurt didn't hit until the end of Middle School/beginning of High School, and I was bullied a bit during that time. It was Middle School that introduced me to a group of boys who were not the most healthy peers for me to count as friends. And then there is all the hormonal stuff that goes on in both boys and girls as they mature physically. I know Eva is not me, and yet I have had to work to keep my lingering feelings about my own pre-teen years from coloring how I help her journey through hers.

Worship

Holy Week and Easter Worship Services

Holy Week begins with Palm Sunday this coming weekend and worship services will continue throughout the week at both Christ Church and St. Ignatius, until Easter Sunday, on April 16th. Please join us as we journey towards the cross in the days ahead. You may find a complete list of worship services here.

Last Call for Easter Lilies

Remember a loved one at Easter with a memorial Easter lily. Send the name(s) and a check for $25 per lily to Ethel Horton, 402 Palm Court, SSI, 31522. Make checks payable to "Christ Church Altar Guild." Please make your order by April 9th.

Busy Bags Are Here!
Busy bags are now available for your young children to enjoy during our Sunday services. Just pick up a bag from the basket in the church, let your children explore the contents and return the bag at the end of the service.

Flower Guild Newcomer Classes
Our second week's class members, Deborah Jaehning, Sherry Bowen, Donna Purdy, Ania McQuade, Julie Beimler, and Nancy Zell worked hard to create gorgeous arrangements this past week.

In support of our new Parish Hall Services, the Christ Church, Frederica Flower Guild is training new members to design the flowers for our new worship space. Flower Guild members must be willing to fully commit to service to the glory of God and the Church once every 6 to 8 weeks. We are excited to be adding a new generation of flower designers to build up our existing Flower Guild, who beautify our worship spaces on Sundays and major feast days such as Christmas, Easter and Pentecost.

These new members are being taught in class with hands-on training for five weeks during Lent and Eastertide, with each class taught on Saturday mornings in the Parish House. The classes are being taught by David Lowe, a member of the Flower Guild and professional designer for 41 years.

The designs that are produced in each class are being used to beautify the Parish Hall for the 9:15 service on the following Sunday. There is no charge for the class and the flowers will be provided and underwritten by memorial gifts in memory of Merritt Levitan. Click here to see more photos.

Class Schedule

April 8 - for Palm Sunday
April 15 - Easter (we have a plan for this)
April 29th - To be announced at class

Those who would like to join these classes and become part of the Flower Guild should contact David Lowe at [email protected] or call (c) 404-822-9484 or (w) 912-638-7323

Dear Christ Church family,

Well, you've done it again!! For the 64th time you have shown the best of our church community, our islands and our hospitality. Because of your tireless efforts and countless hours of dedication and service, we welcomed thousands of visitors to our island and our church home.  Of course, our community neighbors also once again joined the effort so eagerly and have become an invaluable part of this annual effort...  A huge THANK YOU goes out to our homeowners who so graciously allowed over a thousand folks to traipse through their lovely homes, all for such a wonderful cause...

Formation

Sunday Morning Adult Class

Beginning April 23, the Sunday Morning Adult Class will begin a discussion of James Moore's book Attitude Is Your Paintbrush: It Colors Every Situation. Everyone is welcome. Classes take place in the parish house each Sunday from 10:30 until 11:15. Contact: [email protected]

Spiritual Practices Series - Examen
In our Ash Wednesday service, we, the people of God, "are invited in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent, by self-examination and repentance; by prayer, fasting, and self-denial; and by reading and meditating on God's holy Word." (Book of Common Prayer, 265) The Spiritual Practices series has been exploring each of these practices during the five Thursdays in Lent. The final session of the series will take place on Thursday, April 6th, at 10:30 am. During this workshop, we will use the Daily Examen to help us focus on what God is telling us and make a prayerful reflection on our day.  The  Examen  is an ancient practice in the Church that can help us see God's hand at work in our whole experience.

EYC Activities

EYC Outreach - St. Mark's Towers

On Thursday, March 30th, our EYC, Junior EYC, their parents and other volunteers went to St. Mark's Towers in Brunswick to help serve the monthly birthday dinner. They also provided entertainment for the residents there, which included music by Ladd Rector and Brad Hamil, who led an out-fashioned sing-along. It was a great time of fellowship for all generations! Many thanks to all of the students and adult volunteers who made the outreach at St. Mark's Towers such a special evening. Click here to see photos of all the fun!

Rooted and Relevant
This EYC sponsored worship service takes place on the second Sunday of each month at 6:00 pm. Led by students, adults and clergy, this service is open to any who wish to attend and includes creative liturgy and music that is sometimes softly meditative and other times more upbeat.  Our next EYC Rooted and Relevant service will take place on Palm Sunday, April 9th.

The camps offer creative and educational activities that allow campers to engage with their community and make new friends. Camp Kanuga is specifically designed for campers ages 5-11 and all activities are conducted on-site. Adventure Day Camp is for older children and offers a number of exciting activities from rafting and zip lining to sea kayaking and standup paddle boards. Ages 12-15. Outreach

Relay for Life - Coming soon!
Relay for Life is fast approaching. Come walk with us on Friday, April 21, 2017, starting at 6:00 pm until midnight. You can stay and walk as little or as long as you like. We will be providing Grandy's chicken and water/sodas to all our participants, so plan to stay for dinner. We would appreciate it if participants would bring a side dish, fruit, snacks, etc. to round out our meal.

If you are a survivor, the Survivor's Lap is held first at about 6:30 pm, so plan to come early for that. You are the reason we have the relay.

There will be a Cookies and Cupcakes for a Cure Bake Sale this coming Sunday, April 9, 2017 in the parish hall between the 9:15 and 11:15 services. We need donated baked goods to be delivered on Saturday morning, April 8th, so they can be packaged for the sale.

This Sunday is the last call for ordering our bright yellow tee shirts for Relay for Life. The shirts are $15 cash or check, made payable to Christ Church. You may order any size,  youth through 3X. We will be taking orders at the Bake Sale this Sunday and then placing the order early next week so they arrive in time for the event.

Thank you everyone who participated in our Dine Out for a Cure at Chick-fil-A last Thursday. We received a check for $90.56 to add to our current donations of approximately $2600.00. Let's keep the momentum going so we can reach our goal of $7000. If you need a donation/luminary form, want to register to walk in the Survivor's lap or have any questions, please call Sally Essig at 912-223-5353 or [email protected].

Fellowship

Coffee Hour Hosts NeededCoffeeHour
Have you enjoyed Coffee Hour visiting with clergy, meeting new people and relaxing with friends?   We need volunteers for two-person teams who are willing to bring light refreshments once every four months.  If you would like to make Sundays even more meaningful, call Christine at 540-270-1215 or email [email protected] for more information.

The Flower Cross

The Flowering of the cross has become an Easter tradition at Christ Church. David Lowe and Chris Triplett begin the process by embellishing the cross outside the church entrance with spring flowers and invite the entire parish to bring blooms that they have purchased or cut in their yards to services on Easter Day. (Mr. MacGregor - aka David - will be there to assist, and might even take a picture of you and your family as you celebrate this joyous day) Don't forget your flowers and camera on Easter Morning!

Easter Egg Hunt
The Christ Church Annual Easter Egg Hunt will take place on the front lawn of Christ Church after the 9:15 am Easter Sunday services (April 16). We are asking all who are willing and able to please donate 50 or more FILLED eggs. Please fill eggs with: individually wrapped candies, stickers, temporary tattoos, bubble gum, jaw breakers, mints and tootsie rolls, etc. Donations of filled plastic eggs may be left in the Parish Hall office.

Susanna Wesley Guild April Guest Speaker

The April 18th meeting of the Susanna Wesley Guild will feature a presentation by Dana Haza about the Gathering Place, in Brunswick, Georgia. The mission of the Gathering Place is to reach students with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to equip them to be effective Christian leaders, and to send them to impact their local schools, churches and communities. Please join the members of the Susanna Wesley Guild at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 18th, to learn more about this local, ecumenical program for youth.
