Rector's Ramblings

Music is a powerful medium. Some of my earliest memories are songs. We sang songs quite a bit in my childhood, particularly on car trips. Those were the days when entertaining kids in the backseat was a bit harder than it is today with "screens". Many a chorus of Puff the Magic Dragon was sung in our cars. I also learned songs at church camp and in Sunday School that stick with me, like "Rise and Shine!" Such songs are engrained in my head and my soul, and I have enjoyed sharing them with my children.

And then there are the songs that I learned as an adolescent and young adult, those songs that shaped who I was becoming, spoke to me on deep levels (deep levels, man); the anthems of my maturation, songs like Beck's, "Loser". And because I was a church nerd (and still am) there are the hymns and anthems I sang and continue to sing from the depth of my soul. There are the old favorites and new favorites alike, like "Surely it is God who saves me," the Daw setting of the First Song of Isaiah.  Sometimes, when the choir is singing an anthem, I remember that I sang it twenty years ago, still remembering phrases, both text and music. Once music gets in, it really doesn't leave.

Worship

The Bishop's Annual Visitation

On Sunday, April 30, 2017, our Bishop, the Right Reverend Scott Anson Benhase visited Christ Church, Frederica, where he led services at 9:15 in the Parish House and at 11:15 in Christ Church. During 9:15 worship, he blessed the new furnishings and hymnals for the Parish Hall service. At the 11:15 service in the church, he blessed the icons created by the Icon Writing Group and helped Christ Church receive a new member, Skip Slocum. The last class of the Newcomers Flower Guild for Parish Hall services met on  Saturday, April 29th. Many thanks to all who participated in the classes over the last few weeks and to David Lowe for leading them. Exquisite flower arrangements have been produced week after week by these students and their dedicated teacher.

The classes were graciously sponsored by the Merritt Levitan Memorial Fund, which furnished the flowers and five beautiful new containers for creating arrangements. We appreciate all the work that has gone into glorifying our worship spaces by all members of the flower and altar guilds. To see more photos of the Flower Guild's work, click here.

Sunday Morning Adult Class

The Sunday Morning Adult Class will meet as usual this coming Sunday, May 7th and then take a break for the summer. When the class resumes on September 10th, it will begin a series based on the Great Courses materials entitled "The New Testament."  It's a comprehensive series that covers the New Testament from Matthew to Revelation. EYC Activities
Rooted and Relevant
This EYC sponsored worship service takes place on the second Sunday of each month at 6:00 pm. Led by students, adults and clergy, this service is open to any who wish to attend and includes creative liturgy and music that is sometimes softly meditative and other times more upbeat.  Our next EYC Rooted and Relevant service will take place the coming Sunday, May 7th.

Our final EYC will be on  May 21st .  We will have a picnic and putt putt at Neptune park again this year.  We will do it pot-luck style with the church providing the meat. It was a blast last year, so please make plans to come!!!

A New Puppet Stage for Christ Church

Christ Church parishioner Bob Theobald has created a beautiful puppet stage for the children of the parish. It is his original design and he did all the work and donated it for use in our children's programs. Our EYC recented painted the new stage to help prepare it for future use.

Plans are for the stage to be used in a variety of ways which include  Sunday  School, Vacation Bible School and other camps. We are so thankful to Bob for making this beautiful stage, and we know our children will love using. Thanks, too, to the youth who helped paint it!

Camp Kanuga 2017 - June 19 - 23

Kanuga is returning to Christ Church this summer with camps for ages 5 - 11 and ages 12 - 15.  Camp Kanuga Local Day Camps are a great way to introduce children to the summer camp experience. The camps offer creative and educational activities that allow campers to engage with their community and make new friends. Camp Kanuga is specifically designed for campers ages 5-11 and all activities are conducted on-site. Adventure Day Camp is for older children and offers a number of exciting activities from rafting and zip lining to sea kayaking and standup paddle boards. Ages 12-15. To register for either camp, click here.

Honey Creek Summer Camps

School is almost out, which means Honey Creek Summer Camp is coming up fast. Go to honeycreek.org/camps to register for one or more of the camp sessions. Tuition for each session is $440. The required deposit of $75 is applied to the total camp tuition. Tuition covers room and board, special activities, art supplies, camp photo and camp t-shirt. Scholarships are available from both congregations and Episcopal Youth and Children Services to defray the costs of participating in camp.

Helping the Children in Our Community

The Backpack Buddies will be packing weekend meals for local children again on May 17th, at 10:00 am. Please join them for this very important outreach project. All are welcome!

Summer break is nearly here, so Glynn Episcopal Ministries is planning their usual summer Friday afternoon reading program and hot meal at St. Anthanasius, in Brunswick.
