Rector's Ramblings

I'm back again this week for the final NOT The Rector's Ramblings.  Fr. Tom will be back to rambling next week.  Becky+

Several of you have asked if I got THAT ROOM - the office cleaned up. YES I DID! I will admit that the clean-up took far longer than the three thirty minute sessions I had estimated. It was more like two days, but the office hasn't looked this good in years.

As I was sorting through all that paper and stuff, I realized that not only could I now work in the office, I had room to set up an area to work on my icons at home. (I am one of the people who took the icon class last August and found this to be a meaningful spiritual practice.) A call to a fellow icon writer provided a drawing table and another friend was getting rid of a stool. An on-line order to the art supply store for paint and a trip into Brunswick for brushes and I was set up and ready to go, all for less than $75. I was amazed at how, in a matter of only a few hours, I had everything I needed. I had wanted to work on my icons at home, but was convinced I had nowhere to work and that it would be very expensive to get what I needed. My assumptions were wrong, all of them.

Worship

Ordination of The Rev. Deacon Ashton Williston
Please join us at Christ Church, Frederica on Saturday, August 5th, at 10:30 am, for the ordination to the priesthood of our Curate, Ashton Williston. Following the service, there will be a reception in the Parish Hall. All are invited.

Icon Writing Workshop in August
Icon  writing is much more than learning to paint an  icon; a painting depicting Jesus, Mary, angels or saints. Orthodox Christians consider making  icons more a form of prayer than art, and believe the writer's hand is guided by God as s/he writes in paint. Each brush stroke is a meditative act. Those who have painted  icons describe the experience as deeply spiritual and faith-enhancing.

Our instructor is Fr. David Holland, who has been teaching icon writing for  24  years. No previous artistic ability is needed. Fr.  David  has never had anyone not finish an  icon . We will  write  the  icons  shown above.

Our icon writing workshop August 20th-26th is limited to 16 people, so please register soon. We will meet in the Christ Church Parish Hall from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday - Thursday, 8:30 am - 5:00 pm on Friday and 8:30 am - 12:00 pm on Saturday.

The only thing you need to bring is a willing spirit, as Fr. David will furnish all materials and instruction. On Sunday, August 27, our icons will be blessed during Sunday morning services. The cost for the workshop is $425. To register, call the church office at 912-638-8683. For more information, contact Mtr. Becky at [email protected] or give her a call.

Outreach

If you didn't get a chance to read this great story about the St. Athanasius Food Bank last week, here's your opportunity to learn more about this important program.

"For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in..."        - Matthew 25:35

A few weeks ago I wrote about supporting Heifer International as a way to help feed the world's hungry people. I still think that's a wonderful  program and I encourage you to consider periodic donations (visit
www.heifer.org ). But it's good to remember that we don't have to leave Glynn County to find hungry people who need our help. There is a local faith-based charity that we can support that is working hard to look after our own poor by providing food, clothing, prayer, encouragement, acceptance, smiles and lots of hugs.

Feeding Local Children In Need
This summer the Backpack Buddies are packing bags for Safe Harbor teens, Glynn Episcopal Ministries Summer Fun Friday afternoon kids, and the Children in Action Sports Camp participants. Hunger doesn't take a summer break and neither do the Buddies!

Christ Church will soon launch our seventh year of providing weekend food bags to disadvantaged children in the Glynn County area. But first we'd like to look back and celebrate the school year that just ended. We provided 7,265 weekend food bags, totaling 32,640 pounds of food to our young Backpack Buddies. Many thanks to all who have supported this important mission through their gifts, time and talent!

The Backpack Buddies continue to be active this summer, providing weekend food backs for the Street Beat teens, kids at Children In Action Sports Club, and youngsters attending the GEM Friday Fun program at St. Athanasius Parish Hall. We will be packing again on Wednesday, July 26th, at 10:00 am. Please join us!

With the onset of the new 2017-18 school year, we hope to again serve children attending St. Simons Elementary, Oglethorpe Elementary, Burroughs-Molette Elementary, Golden Isles Elementary, and Safe Harbor's Street Beat teenagers.

This is where we need our Christ Church parishioners' help . We can feed a child for $10.00 a month, $50.00 for a half year or $100 for the full 10 month/38 week school year. This provides for the food purchase, the storage bag, and gives us a small allowance for special items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, fresh fruit, and extra snacks for extended school vacations. Please prayerfully consider donating to help feed these children in need by sponsoring a child for a month, half the year or for a full year.  For more information, please contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or (912) 222-9206.
