Rector's Ramblings

This week's solar eclipse was one of the most amazing things I have ever seen in my life. While there are a bunch of clichéd insights I could make about light and darkness, or shadows and blockages, or even orbits and special glasses, I think I am simply struck by the natural beauty of it (although I can't guarantee that I won't slip a cliché in here somewhere. The whole process of witnessing my first eclipse was awe-some from start to finish. I had seen pictures of eclipses before, but never experienced one. I had done my research and knew what to expect, and still I was blown away by it. It was so cool, in fact, that I kept smiling and saying things like, "wow," for a good thirty minutes after we had gotten back in the car to head home.

Worship

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us this fall for one of the many worship opportunities we're offering at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, we have the Rite II Eucharist service at St. Ignatius Chapel on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service, followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for our younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship takes place in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm in Christ Church.

On September 10th, our monthly 6:00 pm Sunday evening EYC Rooted and Relevant services resume, and on October 11th, X Church begins again, at 6:30 pm, every Wednesday. There are also special worship services planned throughout the fall season, like the Blessing of the Animals, that you don't want to miss! To see the schedule for fall worship and read about all the programs and activities happening at Christ Church, click here.

Icon Writing Workshop

Participants in the 2017 Icon Writing Workshop, taking place in the Parish House this week, are learning patience, persistence and peace, as they carefully and methodically create their icons. They're mixing a fair amount of laughter and fellowship into their work, as well! On Sunday, August 27th, the icons they've created will be blessed during morning worship services. To see more photos of the artists at work, click here.

Music Rehearsals Resume in September

September 5th - Rehearsals for Hand Bell Choir, Choristers and Trebles

We're excited to begin our musical season at Christ Church with rehearsals on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. The Christ Church Hand Bell Choir will gather for rehearsal in the Parish House at 2:15 pm, our young Choristers will start practice at 4:30 pm and our older Trebles will rehearse at 5:00 pm.

September 7th - Christ Church Adult Choir Rehearsal (New Rehearsal Day)

This fall, Adult Choir rehearsal will move from Wednesday to Thursday and the first meeting will take place on September 7, 2017. The time for rehearsal is changing, too, and will now be held from 6:00 - 7:30 pm. We're looking forward to a spiritually enriching season of music ministry at Christ Church!

Revival: Fearless Faith, Boundless Love

The Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, is traveling throughout the country this year offering a series of revivals. On Sunday, September 17th, the  Diocese of Georgia will offer a revival based on Fearless Faith and Boundless Love. Join us for a day of renewal and to celebrate the life and legacy of a Saint in Georgia, Deaconess Anna Alexander. The revival worship will use the propers for Deaconess Anna Alexander of Georgia (1865-1947) and displays, handouts, and a video will tell the story of this saint of Georgia.

The day begins with a service at Good Shepherd, Pennick where Deaconess Anna Alexander served.  At 2:00 pm, parishioners from all over the diocese of Georgia will gather under a large tent on the grounds of Honey Creek Retreat Center to hear the Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church, as he shares his message of love and renewal. Please save September 17, as it will be a day to celebrate our faith together and to share it with others. For more information and to register for the revival through the diocese online, click here

Bus Transportation to Honey Creek on Sept.17

Because parking at Honey Creek is extremely limited, the diocese is asking attendees use group transportation. We have arranged for two buses to drive the round trip from Christ Church to Honey Creek and back on the day of the revival. The buses will be leaving from Christ Church at 11:30 am and departing from Honeycreek for the return trip at 4:00 pm. The cost per person is $28. To reserve and purchase a seat on the bus, click here to go to the Christ Church Pushpay payment page.

Special note: After you've clicked the button to reserve and pay for your seat, please make sure to choose Revival "Bus" Honeycreek from the options listed.

You may also pay for a bus seat by check, made out to Christ Church, Frederica, for $28. Please write "Bus" in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to the church office or put in the offering plate.

Happening is Happening Again!
Registration is open for Happening, a Christian experience presented by teenagers for teenagers. Designed for youth in grades 10 - 12, Happening is a cornerstone of diocesan youth programs and an experience not to miss. Ben Sandbach is the teen serving as Rector for Happening #99, which meets Friday, September 22-24 at Honey Creek.

Most young people have serious questions about Jesus and the Church. Happening is designed to address these questions. During a  Happening weekend, participants experience the love of Christ as shown through prayer, worship, and the ministry of peers, clergy, and lay adults. The Happeners are encouraged to make their renewed faith a part of their everyday lives. Happening shows how Christianity can keep pace with the many changes in our lives and our world.

Adult Sunday Class - The New Testament
The Adult Sunday morning Class is currently doing a 24-week series from The Great Courses lectures on the New Testament. The Class meets from 10:30 to 11:15 am each week in the Parish Hall and the Rev. Dr. Robert W. (Bob) Brown is the facilitator and teacher for the Class. The New Testament course promises to be an inspiring and educational event.

The New Testament is undoubtedly the single most important book in the history of Western civilization, whether seen as a religious book of faith or as a cultural artifact. The 24 lessons of this course will approach the New Testament from a historical perspective, bracketing questions of belief and theological truth to acquire a historically rich grounding for our understanding of these foundational documents.

The course will begin with four lessons on the historical context in which the New Testament was written, considering both the world of Greco-Roman pagan cults and the world of early Judaism.

In the second four lessons, we will examine the New Testament Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These are our principal sources for knowing about the life and teachings of Jesus; they are also major literary works in their own right, each with its own perspective on who Jesus was and why his life and death matter.  Come join us for these lessons and be enriched in your understanding of the New Testament.  Everyone is welcome.

Young Adult Sunday Morning Study
If you're interested in learning about boundaries in your life, please join our soon-to-be-ordained Curate, Ashton Williston, as she leads this study on Sunday mornings. The class will meet in the vestry room for Sunday school beginning on August 20th at 10:30.

The first morning will be an essential meet and greet, with the passing out of the book, Boundaries: When to Say Yes, How to Say No - To Take Control of Your Life. Click here to read a review of this fascinating book.

If you would like to know more information or have any questions, please contact Ashton at ashton@ccfssi.org

Convictions Book Study
Beginning on August 30th, an eleven week study based on the book, Convictions - How I Learned What Mattered Most , by Marcus Borg, will take place on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm. Marcus Borg contends that Christians in America are at their best when they focus on hope and transformation, and return to what really matters most - bringing to earth the kingdom of God Jesus talked about and transforming our relationships with one another. The class will be  led by the Christ Church clergy team.

Enneagram Workshop Coming in September
On September 15-16, 2017, Christ Church, Frederica presents the Rev. Dr. Paul Hanneman's introduction to The Enneagram. Join Dr. Hanneman for this workshop as he explores this ancient spiritual tool... the wisdom of the Fourth Century Desert Fathers, the first Christian monastics...deep, universal and life-changing.

The Enneagram is about people - how we are the same, how we are different, what makes us tick and how we get in our own way. The Enneagram offers an accurate description of the inner geography of our minds. It describes nine fundamental personality styles. It helps explain why we behave the way we do. It offers specific directions for personal growth.

Rev. Dr. Paul Hanneman, a graduate of Richard Rohr's The Living School, is a certified Enneagram trainer, has studied extensively with Don Riso and Russ Hudson, Thomas Condon, and Helen Palmer. He has taught The Enneagram for over 20 years. He retired after pastoring four congregations over 25 years and serving 15 years as Program Director/Community Educator for the Urban Ministry Center in Charlotte, North Carolina. He now teaches spiritual formation (including the Enneagram) throughout the area, and offers spiritual direction and counseling from his office at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in uptown Charlotte.

Everyone is welcome!  Join us September 15-16, 2017, in the Christ Church, Frederica Parish Hall for this higher- spiritual-learning course.
