Rector's Ramblings

In my adult years people have tended to assume that I am athletic. I have done some running, but I'm not a runner. I like to be active, but I've never thought of myself as an athlete. I didn't play any organized sports as a child. I ran Cross Country and one year of Track and Field in high school, and I briefly played in a bowling league. I was late in learning the basics of most sports like baseball, basketball, football; no one in my family watched or played sports. As a result, I never played organized field or ball sports. I took up golf in seminary, but never played much, and rarely do now because of my schedule. Sports have not been a large part of my life and never have been.

Despite all that I am now a soccer coach. Calleigh is playing rec-league soccer this fall and the Parks Department put out a call for coaches. I responded to ask some questions about what it might involve, and the response was, "thank you for volunteering!" This week I was given the league rules and a team roster and given suggestions about a practice schedule. I guess I'm a soccer coach after all, which is a little intimidating because I never played organized soccer. Until this week, I could not have told you how many players take the field for a game, and I still can't explain all the rules. I realize that's hardly the point at this stage. I have some work to do, nonetheless.

Worship

Fall Worship Schedule

Join us this fall for one of the many worship opportunities we're offering at Christ Church! On Saturdays, at 5:30 pm, we offer the Rite II Eucharist service at St. Ignatius Chapel on Demere Road. On Sundays, we start the morning in the historic church with the 8:00 am, 1928 Book of Common Prayer service, followed by two 9:15 am Eucharist services (usually Rite II) in the church and in the Parish Hall. At 9:15 am, we also offer Kidurgy, our Liturgy of the Word for our younger children. At 11:15 am, Rite I Eucharistic worship takes place in the church. On Wednesdays, the Healing Service is held at 12:00 pm in Christ Church.

On October 11th, X Church begins again, at 6:30 pm, every Wednesday. There are also special worship services planned throughout the fall season, like the Blessing of the Animals, that you don't want to miss! Music

Greetings from Miss Kathleen!

Choirs are up and running! I want to extend a HUGE thank you to George Ingram and everyone who kept things running so smoothly while I was away on Sabbatical.

The focus of my time away was composition. On Wednesday, September 28, at 6:30 pm, in the Parish Hall, I will offer a one hour presentation of what, where, and how our time was spent. I will also share the compositions I wrote for our faith community. Come and enjoy refreshments reflecting our travels, as Te and I fill you in on our adventure.

ECW Fall General Meeting and Brunch
On Saturday  morning,  October 7, 2017, at 10:00 am, the Christ Church ECW will have their annual fall general meeting and brunch . The speaker for the morning will be Darcelle Burandt, who is beginning a wonderful new ministry in our area called "House of Hope". It is an outreach to young victims of human trafficking. She has renovated a house* in Brunswick where these victims can be safely housed and receive the counseling and treatment they might need. (Read more here.) All women from Christ Church are invited to attend the meeting and to come hear about this important mission in our community.
Please contact the church office to let us know if you'll be attending, so that we may give the caterer an accurate headcount for the free brunch. 912-638-8683

* The house was slated to open before Hurricane Irma struck Glynn County. Unfortunately, a tree fell through the roof and now the roof and ceiling need repairs. If you'd like to help with this work, click here to make a donation.

Outreach

Helping those affected by Hurricane Irma

Nearly everyone in the Christ Church family was affected by Hurricane Irma last week, some more dramatically than others. If you would like help others in our community and beyond, please consider making a donation to the Rector's  Discretionary Fund by check, or to Episcopal Relief and Development, either by check or making a donation on their website here:

Collars on the Corner - A Ministry of Prayers and Presence
By John La Boone

"Dear brothers and sisters, pray for us."
- I Thessalonians 5:25

I love ecumenical initiatives of all kinds. The world needs more people from different traditions, faiths and backgrounds to come together and respond to the needs of their fellow human beings with an effort that is strengthened because it is diversely shared. I recently learned about an inspiring ministry started in September 2016 by an Episcopalian and a Roman Catholic in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to serve people in troubled neighborhoods regardless of their religion or lack of religion.

It's called "Collars on the Corner," and it was created by Episcopal Deacon Kevin Stewart and Roman Catholic Deacon Jim Banach. The two men teamed up last year after discussing over lunch how they wanted to get outside and engage struggling people in their city in new ways. They had a great role model for doing that. "My understanding of scripture is Jesus spent more time out on the streets than in a building, so we felt that we should go," explained Stewart, who is the Episcopal Diocese of Milwaukee's missioner for community engagement. "But go where and do what?"
Be a Backpack Buddy!
You can adopt a child into the Backpack Buddies program. This outreach provides weekend food bags to disadvantaged children in Glynn County. You can feed a child for $10.00 a month, $50.00 for a half year or $100 for the full 10 month/38 week school year. Please prayerfully consider donating to help feed these children in need by sponsoring a child for a month, half the year or for a full year. You may make your check to Christ Church, Frederica with Backpack Buddies in the memo line and send it to the church, drop it in the offering or at the church office.  Contact Susan Shipman at [email protected] or 912-222-9206.

Next packing session will be Wednesday, October 4th, at 10:00 am. Join us!

Christ Church Comforters Pick Up Their Knitting Needles and Crochet Hooks for the Season on October 12th
Do you enjoy knitting or crocheting? Then please join the Christ Church Comforters as they gather once a month to make prayer shawls for those who need warmth and comfort.  Some of the members also make watch caps which are distributed to the International Seafarers.  It's an excellent time of sharing and putting your skills to good use. Even if you don't knit or crochet, please plan to stop by and visit with us at our next meeting - Thursday, October 12th at 2:00 pm. (We've got plenty of talented yarnsmiths who will be glad to give you lessons!)  If you have any questions, please call Gay Barron at  770-366-5091 or by email to  [email protected]

Christ Church Master Plan - Input NeededMasterPlanSurvey

As your Vestry prepares to go on retreat this weekend we need feedback from the congregation about our Master Plan. Our Town Hall meetings scheduled for this month were preempted by Hurricane Irma, but we think we can learn a lot from a simple survey.

If you are not familiar with the Master Plan, you will want to familiarize yourself with it before responding to the survey.  You can see an executive summary of the plan by clicking   here

Please take time THIS WEEK to fill out our brief survey by clicking on the link below:

A few people have had difficulties logging in to the survey.  If you can't get the page to load, try cutting and pasting the website from the email into your browser's address bar.  Also, if you find that it isn't saving your answers as you take the quiz, try clicking "ok" when it pops up after each question before scrolling down. It may also be a cookie setting on your browser. You might try using another browser. If all else fails, come to the office for a paper copy! Please get survey responses in as soon as possible.
