Refresh Your Dining Room on a Budget
The holidays are fast approaching, and many of us are thinking of ways we can refresh our home.  Today we are going to focus on the dining room.

You may want a complete change or just a quick freshening. If you have a small budget, declutter by removing stray papers and miscellaneous items. Purchase new linens, paint old wooden chairs, recover chair seats with new fabric, or bring in a potted plant. If fabric is too expensive, fabric paint may be an alternative.

If your budget allows, swap out the lighting and add a mirror to reflect light and make the room feel more spacious. If you want to change the color of the walls, you can save money by doing it yourself. Don’t know how much paint to buy? Measure the room and ask your home improvement or paint store to calculate the amount needed.

Adding artwork and a rug can add style, color, and warmth to your dining room. Choose a flat-weave or low pile rug to make it easier to cleanup food spills and pull chairs out.

There are many ways to spruce up your dining area. Sometimes thoroughly cleaning everything, including the floor, and adding fresh flowers can make a dramatic difference.

Whether you make a few changes or do a complete overhaul, decide what’s most important to you based on your budget.
Kill Mold Before It Kills You
Mold, one of the most common fungi on earth, is inside and outside of buildings. Every home has some mold in it, and some workplaces are affected too.

Yes.  Mold grows in many places and on most things  …food, on glass, under sinks, in basements and compost, in wooded areas, and in piles of debris.

Mold can grow in almost any damp area and on almost any surface that does not get direct sunlight . It is found inside boats and campers, in trash cans, garages, and sheds. Mold can also grow behind wallpaper—especially in kitchens and bathrooms.  Wherever you notice a musty smell , lingering moisture, unsightly stains, and/or a dark environment, look for mold or mildew.

If you think you can just cut away the mold from the bread or cheese or wipe it off a hard surface, think again. Even a Clorox bath may not get rid of all the mold.

A friend who constantly cleans her bathroom with Clorox says the mold keeps coming back.  She has yet to get rid of the spores …the part of mold that travels through the air looking for a damp spot to settle on. The mold spores cannot be seen with the naked eye; however,  unless you get rid of the spores, the mold WILL come back—again and again.

Mold comes in many types and colors. The type of mold you have, however, is far less important than how it affects you and those around you.  Too much exposure to mold can make an otherwise healthy child or adult sick. Mold seems to make some children more susceptible to asthma. In adults, it has been linked to allergies, itching, respiratory infections, and more frequent asthma attacks.

In addition to making people sick,  mold can destroy whatever surface its spores are growing on or in. While the leaves on the forest floor make great potting soil, destruction of carpet, walls and flooring can be quite costly!

If you want to prevent mold from growing, you must get rid of moisture!  If a surface is wet, dry it within 24-48 hours to keep mold from gaining access. Moist surfaces that do not get direct sunlight provide favorable conditions for mold to grow.

A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture, and Your Home  from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) will give you the basics on mold. Get it from  https://www.epa.gov/sites/production/files/2016-10/documents/moldguide12.pdf

Freeze Your Credit Report for Free
Co ngress passed a new law that allows you to freeze your credit file for  FREE . You can also get a credit freeze for children under age 16. This prevents anyone from opening an account in the child’s name without your permission or knowledge.
What is a credit freeze?  A credit freeze stops most businesses and others from reviewing your credit file. Insurers and employers are exempted and will still have access to your credit report.
How do you freeze your credit file?  When you call or use the online service, you will be asked for personal information and given a code or asked to create a PIN. The freeze must be put in place by the next business day.
If you write, you should provide a signed letter, list your Social Security number, date of birth and your mailing address. Enclose a copy of your driver’s license or other government ID and a copy of a utility bill with your home address. Within a couple of weeks, you will receive a letter containing your PIN or code.
How do you lift the freeze?  You must ask to have a freeze temporarily lifted or removed permanently, and you must have your code/Pin to lift the freeze. When an online or phone request is made, the freeze must be lifted within one hour. If the request is made by mail, the freeze must be lifted within three business days.
Why are credit freezes important ? They protect your credit score and make it more difficult for thieves to open an account in your name or for your identity to be stolen.
Don’t freeze your credit  prior to applying for a loan. Do unfreeze your credit before opening new accounts.
You must  freeze your credit file at each of the three consumer credit reporting agencies
Equifax: 1-800-349-9960
Equifax | PO Box 105069
Atlanta, GA 30348
Experian : 1-888-397-3742
Experian | PO Box 4500
Allen, TX 75013
Trans Union : 1-888-909-8872
Trans Union | PO Box 2000
Chester, PA 19016
A credit freeze does not prevent you from getting your free annual credit report nor does it prevent a thief from making charges to your existing accounts. Additionally, it will not stop pre-screened credit offers.
