KEEPERS OF THE FLAME

The OJC community treasures our Yom HaShoah tradition of Keepers of the Flame. For every hour of a complete 24 hours, at least one congregant sits silently in our sanctuary, guarding six flames. One person will be responsible for each hour, but all of us can visit throughout the day. Please  sign up here up to be a Keeper of the Flame in the Sanctuary.

On March 25, 1942, nearly 1000 young, unmarried Jewish women, many teenagers, boarded a train in Poprad, Slovakia filled with a sense of adventure and national pride and thinking they were going to work in government service at a factory for a few months. Instead, they were transported to Auschwitz as slave laborers. Only a few would survive. Heather Dune Macadam, the film director, will be in residence to introduce the film and for a Q&A to follow.

SUPPORT OUR BAR/BAT MITZVAH PROJECTS

Hi! I’m Leah Shefsky! I have a really special project I’m working on to help families in the NICU where I was born and lived for 97 days as a baby. For my Bat Mitzvah Project and also for my Girl Scout Silver Award, I am starting a project called “Leah’s Little Library”. Babies’ brain development depends on experiencing language starting at birth.

VOTE HERE

Voting for the World Zionist Congress has opened and continues through May 4. The OJC is aligned with MERCAZ USA, the Zionist Organization of the American Conservative/Masorti Movement and we need all our congregants and their families to vote for the MERCAZ slate in order to support funding for the Movement's goals which include support for combatting antisemitism, pluralism and strengthening the bonds between American Jews and Israel. It only takes "5 minutes and $5". In the meantime, if you have any questions or wish to volunteer in our getting out the vote effort, please contact Lloyd Fishman at  or 201-314-1861.
