Mac Schweitzer: A Southwest Maverick Rediscovered

Be among the first to experience Mac Schweitzer's lost legacy! For more than six decades, her work as a pioneering female artist was hidden from view. Now, her bold original works are revealed for the very first time in this year-long retrospective exhibition at Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West.

Join author/curator Ann Hedlund for an illustrated talk at Western Spirit on Thursday evening, Oct. 30th, 6 - 8 pm. Ann will explore how Mac Schweitzer became an artist, what inspired her work, and what kind of creative experiments she pursued. A booksigning will follow. Sign up here.

Ann Hedlund will speak during Tucson Modernism Week about the rise of Tucson as a mid-century arts colony, with Mac Schweitzer as a leading participant. Like others who were part of the modernist movement, she rejected traditional realism, sought dramatic means of expression, and embraced new stylistic forms. The illustrated talk takes place at the Tucson Museum of Art on Wednesday, Nov. 5th, 6:30 - 8:00 pm.

During Scottsdale's ArtWalk nights, enjoy all of Western Spirit's shows, including Mac's exhibition, for FREE. Many neighboring galleries are open for everyone! Thursdays evenings, 7-9 pm, from November to April.

February 2026 events in downtown Silver City, New Mexico!

Flash Gallery at Light Art Space will host a showing of lithographs by Mac Schweitzer and photographs by Larry Ollivier from February 5 to 28, 2026. The exhibit opens in time for a first Friday ArtWalk on Feb. 5, 5 - 7 pm. On Sunday, February 8, 2026, 3 - 4:30 pm, join us for Ann Hedlund's illustrated talk and booksigning.
