Below please find an announcement about Enrollment in Legionnaire Insurance Trust's (LIT) free to legion Family members accidental death coverage.
Many times members speak of LIT in bad terms or uniformed about what it does. Like all insurances, LIT has a range of paid insurances that cover certain things, and if any member purchases an insurance plan insure you read the terms and what is covered. Overall, we hear little of dissatisfied LIT customers, and we try to work with LIT and our members for good customer experiences. The number ONE issue is a family member calls after accidental death looking to see if the Legion Family member has the free coverage, and the LEGION FAMILY MEMBER DID NOT TAKE THE TIME TO ENROLL. With this announcement one time is all it takes to insure the coverages offered in the no cost coverage is there when the loved one calls. I know it is a small amount, but every little bit helps.
The rest of the story is what many don't realize. The benefit in Dept dues amounts that would have to be charged each member (or the fundraising that would be necessary), if not for the LIT programs. Just in the last 3 years LIT has distributed $220,000.00 to the Dept of MD from the insurance funds, and over $2 million since its inception. If we did not receive this income the dues amount charged to each member would be raised approximately $5.00 over that 3 year period to make up the difference. This General Fund pays for the 2 full-time Service Officers and the HQs staff. Every year the cost of funding just the 2 Service Officers exceeds the insurance program revenue from LIT. Without this the impact to the Service we offer would be significant.
I am not saying the Dept dues will never go up, but it has assisted the Finance Commission in keeping the dues of Dept where they are at $5.50 per member ($1.50 additional per member is for the subscription to the Free State Warrior). It also allows us to use the money from our fundraising campaigns to fund our Children and Youth, Veteran Rehabilitation, and Americanism grant programs, instead of to fund General Fund requirements.
Thanks to everyone that supports the LIT and our Dept in so many aspects. I for one am glad about this announcement of not having to re-enroll in 2016 for LIT.
If you have never enrolled, it is free.
