Cross the Pond with Us in 2025
Richard McKenna, President, BABCNE | CEO, Atlantic Strategies
This coming spring, the BABCNE, along with the UK Dept for Business and Trade, will be putting together a trade mission from New England to the UK. If you’ve never been a delegate before, or your company hasn’t sponsored one, I thought I share a few thoughts the very first trade mission I joined more than 15 years ago.
It’s a privilege to participate and if well planned on the organizer’s part and on yours, you stand to create professional and personal relationships that will last a lifetime.
- Before going, immerse yourselves in the cities you’ll be visiting so you have a flavor on what to expect. My first mission was to Liverpool and Manchester, amazing cities, but the trip unexpectedly started with naked Scousers, and a crazy horse race called The Grand National that involved an abundance of makeup and crazy hats!
-
Share with the organizers the industries and types of organizations you’d like to meet. If you want to meet biotech companies, say so in as much detail as you can provide. You’ll also meet suppliers, government contacts, and community leaders along the way. It’s all good and part of the experience.
| |
- Your fellow missioners are just as important to get to know as those contacts you meet overseas. Update your LinkedIn profile well before you depart. Research each person before going over. I traveled with a soccer obsessed (football) Boston Globe editor, a successful businessman from Cypress, an attorney whose suit never wrinkled and a UK government official who had a passion for Beetles music.
-
Participate in every social, business event and meeting you can. It’s not a vacation. There are stark differences between the UK and the US. Be respectful. Be curious. And be reciprocal in networking - - be prepared to give back versus just take.
| |
Be prepared to speak about your business - - but remember long winded will not cut it. Keep in mind your fellow travelers may be a bit jet lagged, if you drone on too long, you’re apt to promote sleepiness. We almost left an overly tired attorney behind when we headed for the airport. It was a Hard Day’s Night!
-
Be curious. The history I leaned about the Mersey and Liverpool Docks was fascinating. UK and US history didn’t start with a tea party!
-
Speaking of tea, you will learn to love it. Haha.
-
Stay in touch with everyone you meet. I still communicate with, socialize with and do business with my fellow missioners and UK-based contacts from 15 years ago.
- And finally, if you’d like more information, I suggest you speak with me and other BABCNE members and the Consulate staff about past trips. Think about what your organization would like to accomplish with a broader international network, and consider joining me by being part of the committee to put it together! More details soon on the BABCNE.ORG website.
Cheers!
Rick McKenna

Slaying the myths about tougher post-Brexit red tape for UK travellers to Europe
Independant, August 25, 2024
British passport holders must currently have their travel documents inspected and stamped. The good news is that passport stamping will end. The bad news is that every traveller must, in theory at least, be fingerprinted and provide a facial biometric.

A growing number of UK families are being hit with inheritance tax on gifts after falling foul of the seven-year rule, official figures show.
The Telegraph, August 24, 2024. Charlotte Gifford, Senior Money Reporter
Parents and grandparents are increasingly giving away vast sums to help their children on to the property ladder and bring their estates below the £325,000 threshold.
But many are getting caught out by a complex rule which states that assets transferred within seven years of a person’s death should be considered part of their estate for tax purposes.
