I want say thank you to everyone who joined us in September for my town hall. Your presence mattered as we covered several important issues. I appreciated your questions, comments, and perspectives, and I will take your feedback with me as I work with my colleagues. If you weren't able to make it or you still have questions, you can reach out any time at Kirkland.Carden@GwinnettCounty.com.

Ordinance approved to establish blight tax program
The Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance creating a blight tax program to encourage owners to remediate or redevelop blighted properties. Under the ordinance, properties designated as blighted will pay seven times the millage rate — or $48.65 per $1,000 in assessed value compared to the current rate of $6.95 per every $1,000 in assessed property value — until improvements are made. Once a property is remediated, its general fund millage rate will drop by 50% for three years.
The increase and reduction will not apply if the owner secures approval for a remediation or redevelopment plan and stays in compliance. Owners can appeal a blight designation to the County’s Board of Construction Adjustments and Appeals. The ordinance excludes occupied residential properties.

The Gas South Theater recently celebrated a new partnership with VyStar Credit Union and unveiled the 'VyStar Stage.' I was honored to share some remarks and present a proclamation for their Good is Everywhere Day in Gwinnett.
For more than two decades, Gas South District, and the theater specifically, has been a gathering place for families and communities across the region — and this partnership reflects the kind of investment in our community that goes beyond a name on a building.

It was also a great honor to speak at the September 11 Remembrance Ceremony alongside community leaders and our public safety officials. Even 25 years later, we still continue to come together because “Never Forget” is a choice we make year after year to honor those we lost, the families who carry that burden, and the extraordinary courage shown that day.
We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

It was a privilege to help present a proclamation for the 2026 Korean Festival at Gwinnett Place Mall! Gwinnett is truly blessed to have such a large and vibrant Korean community. What I love most is seeing people from across Gwinnett come together to celebrate, learn, and connect.
A huge thank you to the Korean Festival Foundation, the volunteers, performers, vendors, and everyone who made this year’s celebration possible. I was proud to be part of it!
