Happening Around Gwinnett

County considers opting out of Statewide Adjusted Base Year Homestead Exemption

Gwinnett County has announced that it is considering opting out of the new Statewide Adjusted Base Year Homestead Exemption introduced in House Bill 581. The County has an existing Value Offset Exemption that offers greater savings for homeowners and protects property taxes from inflation.

The Board of Commissioners will hold three public hearings for residents to learn more and share comments. Two public hearings have already been held, with one more taking place at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville on Tuesday, February 18 at 11:00am.

Attend the County's hiring event on February 11

Due to inclement weather, Gwinnett County Government's Career from Here hiring event was postponed and will now take place on Tuesday, February 11 from 9:00am to 3:00pm at the Gas South Convention Center in Duluth.

Participate in resume reviews, resume editing, meet and greets with current employees, and interview with County representatives. All interviews will be held on a first-come, first-served basis. Business casual attire is recommended, and all attendees must register. Visit GwinnettCountyJobs.com to view current job openings and apply for positions with onsite interviews.

What's New in District 1

Improvements coming to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

Gwinnett is enhancing traffic flow and safety around Peachtree Industrial Boulevard. This 1.78-mile roadway widening project will add a new northbound travel lane and upgrade five intersections from Holcomb Bridge Road to Medlock Bridge Road.

The upgraded intersections include Holcomb Bridge Road, Peachtree Corners East, Paul Duke STEM High School, Reps Miller Road, and Technology Parkway. In addition to these improvements, the area will be enhanced with new concrete sidewalks, median islands, curb and gutter, and drainage upgrades. Funded by the SPLOST program, the project is anticipated to be completed by 2026.

Citizens Fire Academy registration now open

Registration is now open for the Citizens Fire Academy with classes scheduled for spring and fall. Residents will learn vital lessons that could prevent a fire or save a life, including CPR training, fire extinguisher training, EMS overview, and more. Classes will also offer information and demonstrations from Gwinnett Fire and Emergency Services specialty teams, including SwiftWater, Hazmat, Mass Casualty, and Trench Rescue.

Spring classes will be held from April 17 to June 12, while fall classes will run from September 11 to November 6. All classes will be held on Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 9:00pm. Registration is required.

Trash and recycling set out guidelines

Trash, recyclables, bulk items, and yard trimmings are scheduled to be collected between 7:00am to 6:30pm on the day of service. Homeowners should place containers or items curbside prior to 7:00am on collection day. Trash and recycling carts should be placed within three feet of the curb or edge of the street and at least three feet away from any obstacles, preferably on the opposite side of the driveway from the mailbox with the trash cart lid opening facing the street.

Residents should use the approved solid waste cart provided by their haulers with trash placed inside with the lid closed. Any overflow will not be collected. When recycling curbside, ensure cans, bottles, and containers are rinsed before being placed in the cart and break down cardboard boxes. For more information on Gwinnett's set out guidelines and a list of unacceptable waste, visit GCSolidWaste.com.
