March 2025

Hello Suleica,

Following the beginning of daylight saving time, spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a season of celebration and community gathering. During March, we recognize Women’s History Month as a time to honor trailblazing women who have shaped our history and continue to lead the way, much like our County's Chairwoman Hendrickson. If you haven't yet, be sure to watch her State of the County address from earlier this month.

This month is also a great time to embrace the outdoors, with longer days and warmer weather ahead. Whether you're enjoying one of Gwinnett’s beautiful parks, attending a community event, or getting involved in a local initiative, I encourage you to take advantage of everything our county has to offer. Be sure to check out the newsletter for ways to stay engaged this month!

As a final note, in March our hearts remain with the families and communities affected by the tragic Atlanta Asian spa shootings in 2021. As we remember the eight beautiful lives we lost to violent hate, let their legacy be a reminder that we must advocate for inclusion, peace and safety for all in our communities.

As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions, ideas, or just want to chat about what’s happening in our community. Wishing you a fantastic March!

County opts out of Statewide Adjusted Base Year Homestead Exemption

As a follow up to last month's newsletter, Gwinnett County Commissioners voted to opt out of the new Statewide Adjusted Base Year Homestead Exemption introduced in House Bill 581. The County's existing Value Offset Exemption — in place since 2001 — offers better protection against rising property values and keeps County government taxes lower for homeowners.

With Gwinnett County's existing VOE, the homeowner's County government taxes are based on the frozen base year valuation, even as property values continue to rise. Most property tax increases seen by Gwinnett homeowners in recent years have been due to increases in school and city taxes, which have risen as property market values have increased.

County Commissioners weighed feedback during three public hearings held at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in January and February before making the decision. Cities and schools hosted their own hearings regarding their decisions.
