September 2025

Hello!

Fall is in the air! There is still time to enjoy the changing weather and get outside. Gwinnett has so many great places I encourage you to get out and explore.

During September and October, we recognize Hispanic Latino Heritage Month, honoring the extraordinary voices, vibrant stories, and rich traditions of Hispanics and Latinos who shape our industries and communities during this year's celebration titled "Defining Culture and Influence."

Your ideas keep our work focused and effective. Please share your thoughts any time at Ben.Ku@GwinnettCounty.com so we can keep making District 2 the best place to live, work, and play.

What's New in District 2

Singleton Park and Greenway Ribbon Cutting

Join us on Tuesday, October 14 at 2:00pm as we cut the ribbon on Singleton Park and Greenway in Norcross. This is an exciting addition to District 2 and Gwinnett County.

The park will feature a playground for older and younger children, a shade sail covered picnic area that overlooks the playground, a 12-foot wide concrete multi-use trail, and more. Funding for this park and greenway includes the 2017 SPLOST Program and a state grant for improving neighborhood outcomes in disproportionally impacted communities.

Celebrate the legacy of President Jimmy Carter

On October 1, Gwinnett County is holding the first annual county-wide Jimmy Carter Day with a special celebration from 10:00am - 11:00am at Best Friend Park, 6224 Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross. This tribute will highlight his lifelong commitment to public service, human rights, and community building with a special tribute to Carter family. The celebration, held in partnership with the Gateway85 Community Improvement District, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and Gwinnett Habitat for Humanity will bring together students, residents, and community partners in a shared reflection on President Carter’s values of peace, unity, and compassion.

Activities throughout the day will include opportunities for service, artistic expression, and public displays inspired by his life’s work. A key part of the tribute is the Jimmy Carter Legacy Art and Essay Contest, engaging young people in the Meadowcreek and Norcross clusters of Gwinnett County Public Schools. Students will share their vision of President Carter’s impact through creative works that will be displayed for the community to enjoy.

Celebrate Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month around Gwinnett

Experience the magic of traditional Mexican folk dances with Alma Mexicana Atlanta on Saturday, September 27 from 11:00am to noon at the Gwinnett County Public Library Lilburn Branch. This multicultural experience will allow attendees learn about folkloric dances and traditions of Mexican culture.

Gwinnett is also celebrating Hispanic Latino Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, recognizing the powerful roles of Latino art, family, traditions, and more. Culminating this observance, all residents are invited to "Fiesta Familia" on Friday, October 10 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center Plaza for an evening of authentic Hispanic cuisine, vibrant live performances, and community spirit.

Urban Redevelopment Agency of Gwinnett County to purchase former Sears property at Gwinnett Place Mall

The Urban Redevelopment Agency of Gwinnett County approved the $11.5 million purchase of the 11.5-acre former Sears site at Gwinnett Place Mall in Duluth. With this acquisition, expected to close by the end of October, the Urban Redevelopment Agency and Gwinnett County will own a combined 87.5 acres of the Gwinnett Place Mall site.

The redevelopment of the site will create a dense, mixed-use activity center that is well connected, green and walkable, while preserving the cultural diversity and character of the area. It will also include the Gwinnett Place Transit Center, which the Board of Commissioners approved in 2025. Funded largely by the Federal Transit Administration, the Transit Center will expand connection throughout the County and is projected to be completed in 2032.
