February 2026

Watkins_2025

Greetings!

This winter has been challenging, but Gwinnett has demonstrated resilience and expertly weathered each storm. I hope you’re staying safe and warm, and please continue to look out for your neighbors and our vulnerable community members.

Two District 3 events which had been postponed due to the inclement weather have now been rescheduled: my Human Trafficking Awareness Town Hall on Monday, March 9 and the Greater Atlanta HBCU College Fair on Saturday, March 7. Details for both events are included in this newsletter.

I am deeply grieved by the recent losses in Gwinnett's public safety community, for Fire-Medic Joshua Garay and for Police Officer Senior Pradeep Tamang. Our thoughts are also with Master Police Officer David M. Reed as he recovers from his injuries. My heartfelt sympathies are with their family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. Please take a moment to remember the service and sacrifice of all the brave individuals who face danger every day to protect and serve our community.

Keep reading below for more District 3 and County news.

Honoring fallen Gwinnett Police Officer Pradeep Tamang

Gwinnett County is mourning the loss of Gwinnett County Police Officer Pradeep Tamang, who was killed in the line of duty Sunday, February 1.

At approximately 7:30am, MPO David Reed and Officer Tamang were dispatched to a financial fraud call in Stone Mountain. During the investigation, the suspect opened fire in an unprovoked attack. Both officers were struck, and one officer was able to return fire, leaving the suspect with non-life-threatening injuries.

Despite heroic efforts by his fellow officers, paramedics, and hospital staff at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, Officer Pradeep Tamang died as a result of his injuries. MPO Reed was also injured in the attack and is in serious but stable condition.

Officer Tamang joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in July 2024 and graduated from the 121st Police Academy in May 2025. He immigrated to the United States from Nepal 10 years ago. He leaves behind a fiancée as well as family in Pennsylvania.

MPO Reed joined the Gwinnett County Police Department in September 2015 and graduated from the 94th Police Academy.

Officer Tamang’s Gwinnett County patrol vehicle has been placed outside Gwinnett County Police Headquarters, located at 770 Hi Hope Road in Lawrenceville, for anyone who would like to come by and pay their respects. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:00am Saturday, February 7 at 12Stone Church in Lawrenceville.
