Huddle and Out onto the Field
Moses said, "I must turn aside and look at this great sight,
and see why the bush is not burned up."
When the Lord saw that he had turned aside to see,
God called to him out of the bush, "Moses, Moses!"
And he said, "Here I am."
The cry of the Israelites has now come to me;
I have also seen how the Egyptians oppress them.
So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people,
the Israelites, out of Egypt."
But Moses said to God, "Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh,
and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?"
He said, "I will be with you.”- Exodus 3:3-4, 9-12

“God is with you.”
One response my teenage-self had to this news was, “So?” The way I heard most people say, “God is with you” was in the sense of God “watching over us,” a bit like a spectator on the sidelines cheering us on. Cheering can be helpful. I have heard athletes in interviews describe the experience of a cheering crowd spurring them to excel in the competition. But when the going is rough, when everything is falling apart, when the stakes are especially high (like commanding the emperor of Egypt to “let my people go”), would we not rather have more than an observer on the sidelines?
I found it helpful to discover that the root of the Hebrew word for “with” (as in Exodus 3:12, “I will be with you”) includes the image of an overshadowing, a presence so intimately close that it blocks out everything else. One translation of that root word is “huddle.” This offers the possibility that “I am with you” is not “I am cheering you on from the sideline,” but rather, “I am huddled with you - - within the midst of all that is occurring.” God calls us into the huddle, the intimacy, the closeness that shares breath and space, light and shadow, and that offers plans and possibilities.
When a sports team huddles, it is for the purpose of connection, support, and planning to better engage the game on the field. We come together this Sunday and each Sunday in worship, in weekly study groups, prayer gatherings, support groups, fellowship, song, retreat times, and more to “huddle” for the purpose of being better empowered and led to engage life on the field -- to go forth and live the healing, generous, and just purpose of God in the world, to invite other people with our words and actions to huddle, and go forth into the world, too. Come, huddle and see!

Vigil for Murder Victims and
LGBTQ+ Community
Wednesday 6:30 pm (Tomorrow)
Our prayers are with the friends and family of Vincent Siqueiros and Cameron Capara, who were murdered early Monday morning. While details are still being released, the shooting outside Tucson’s Venture-N, an LGBTQ+-friendly establishment in Tucson, is being investigated as a hate crime.
Identity-based hatred and violence harm all. We stand with those feeling fear, anger, and sadness in this moment and invite our community to offer love and healing support.
Tucson Queerstory, Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation, and Southern Arizona Senior Pride, are offering a community vigil as a way to come together.

At the Philip Walsted Memorial in Catalina Park, 946 N 5th Ave.
Pastor Michael has been asked to offer support and presence to staff at the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation as they process their own trauma and offer their support to the community. Please also pray for those who are being harmed by hate in our community and for the helpers who are offering supportive presence.

The weather in Tucson is VERY HOT!!!!!!!!!! Hydration is of highest importance. Two very important items to remember in the extreme heat:
- WATER, WATER, WATER THEN MORE WATER. It is known that water is the best source of hydration. The worst source of hydration are caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and not keeping hydrated.

Staying in the heat too long. By the time we feel thirsty, we are starting to dehydrate. For this reason, it is necessary to get in a cool place when thirst first happens in the extreme heat.
