Reflection

Like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house,

to be a holy priesthood,

offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:5

Untitled (3 x 1.5 in) (2.5 x 1.5 in) (2.25 x 1.5 in).png

It's easy for us to come to the conclusion that we don't have the resources or the bandwidth to confront the things we encounter. And we often feel that we cannot address the things we know need to be challenged. Peter's letter to the Christian churches in the Gentile world of Asia Minor reminds us that, in our relationship with and transformation in Jesus the Christ, we are something new and wonderful and seemingly impossible: living stones. The writer of 1 Peter uses this contradiction in terms (stones that live) in a powerful and profound way in order to encourage (en-courage) and guide the listeners in these churches.

They (and we) are far from powerless! They are equipped and empowered to live in a world unsympathetic to their beliefs and values. They do the small things that not only serve as a blessing to those around them, but also, reflect in beautiful ways the nature of the church and the way of following Jesus.

I'll be the first to acknowledge that some of our Christian siblings say and do things that fail to reflect the love and loveliness of our call to follow Jesus. But that isn't the whole story. The peanut butter and school supplies collected in July are part of the story. Every kind word and quiet kindness is part of the story. Every phone call and email and letter and conversation to address injustice is part of the story. Every prayer offered in support of another is part of the story.

In short, you and the beauty you bring with you as a living stone, are an important part of the story. Continue being who you are. Continue doing the things you have been shaped and formed to do. And may God bless you in all you do.

Sabbatical Postcards

Responses

A strong community evolves with openness and honesty. This is us! Thank you for your continued sabbatical postcard responses. Because of the unpredicted volume and depth of your responses, the sabbatical team has called a special meeting in mid-August to review and interpret your collective and varied insights. They will serve as compasses to our forward paths of care and service.

Now is the perfect time to send your reflections and ideas on any or all of the eight postcards.

The first part of the card is from your point of view or experience. The second part of the card is asking you to bridge into another’s experience and point of view, perhaps someone you struggle to understand.

The postcards invite us to enter into the thinking of people we may find hard to understand. Many may just see it as a refreshing shower, but to others, it may be different. This may be a first step to bridging opposing views into common solutions.

If you need another card, extras are available

in the church entrance.

Click here to see the introductory letter and instructions.

Return the postcards:

  1. Through the mail
  2. Drop them in the offering plates in church (unused stamps, too)
  3. Or drop them off in the office

Casas Adobes Lay Ministry (C.A.L.M.)

This Ministry has is all about making contact with people to let them know they are being thought of is vital for the life of the person and the church. To have a reason to make contact is meaningful, but "just because" is also helpful and means a lot, or sometimes more!

In 2023, at our Congregational Conversations, we said, "Being in touch with one another via cards, emails, and phone calls" is a desired vision. From this vision/request, C.A.L.M. was created. What is C.A.L.M. you ask? C.A.L.M. is a volunteer group of fellow congregants who offer to fulfill contact services when requested by you.

  1. We send birthday cards if you have given your birth date to the office, and greeting cards on major Christian holidays, Easter and Christmas to all members and friends of CAUCC.
  2. By your request, we will call you, make home visits and send email greetings and cards.
  3. Pastor John Angiulo, Rev, John Cheek, and our Parish Nurse, Ida Heath are available for visits and communion.

If you would like any of these services, a C.A.L.M. volunteer to contact you, just call the church office at 520.297.1181.

We welcome you to join us, especially if you:

  •  like to meet new friends
  • enjoy helping
  • love others as Christ loves us.
