Summer Reading

I thought in these hot and troubled “dog days” of summer to just have some summer reading. In the context of John Cheek’s beautiful reminder on Sunday that we don’t have to agree all the time, but we must love each other all the time, I thought some time reading the Sermon on the Plain from the Gospel of Luke. We are in this community because we choose to love.

From Luke 6:20-36

Then he looked up at his disciples and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.”

“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled.”

“Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.”

“Blessed are you when people hate you and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice on that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven, for that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.

“But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation.”

“Woe to you who are full now, for you will be hungry.

“Woe to you who are laughing now, for you will mourn and weep.

“Woe to you when all speak well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.”

“But I say to you who are listening: Love your enemies; do good to those who hate you; bless those who curse you; pray for those who mistreat you. If anyone strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from anyone who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. Give to everyone who asks of you, and if anyone takes away what is yours, do not ask for it back again. Do to others as you would have them do to you.

“If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. If you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. If you lend to those from whom you expect to receive payment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. Instead, love your enemies, do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return. Your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, for he himself is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.”

May you live in in understanding of Christ’s abundant love in community. Know you are never alone.

Stay cool.

Peace,

Pastor John

Thank you for your sabbatical responses!

This coming Sunday, July 13th, during coffee hour, catch up on our sabbatical Bridging Views postcard responses! Engage in lively discussion--or individually contemplate--your views on fun, aging, nature, and understanding. Be assured that each anonymous postcard response is honored as an offering to building a strong community in God's vision.

The first part of the card is from your point of view or experience. The second part of the card is asking you to bridge into another’s experience and point of view, perhaps someone you struggle to understand.

The postcards invite us to enter into the thinking of people we may find hard to understand. Many may just see it as a refreshing shower, but to others, it may be different. This may be a first step to bridging opposing views into common solutions.

If you need another card, extras are available

in the church entrance.

Click here to see the introductory letter and instructions.

Return the postcards:

  1. Through the mail
  2. Online (fill 'em out), Click here
  3. Drop them in the offering plates in church (unused stamps, too)
  4. Or drop them off in the office

Please "Print" In

Please remember to print your name in the pew register each week during the service (autographs and signatures are sometimes difficult to decipher). If there’s someone further down the row, please pass it down as well. This is how the office and pastors contact guests and know when friends and members have lost contact. While we enjoy trying to guess faces on the video recording each week, it’s much easier if you help us out. Thank you!

Save the Date

- David LaMotte -

November 14th through 16th

As part of our Sabbatical year, we have invited David LaMotte to spend a weekend with us beginning November 14th through 16th. David is an author, speaker, and musician from Black Mountain, NC. He has offered thousands of concerts and talks on five continents and has released thirteen albums, and authored two books, as well as two children's books. He is a Rotary Peace Fellow, a former member of the AFSC Nobel Peace Prize Nominating Committee, and a co-founder of Senderos, a non-profit supporting arts, education, and mentoring for children in Guatemala. To learn more about David and his work, please visit the website.

One of the books which David has authored is titled You are Changing the World, Whether You Like it or Not. This book describes ways that small, organized efforts can make a difference in our troubled world and discusses how we are all planting seeds of change whether we know it or not. We invite you this summer to read a copy of this book to learn more about his work and about how we too can make a difference in this world. The CAUCC Library has four copies for borrowing and sharing over the summer.

More information regarding the plans for November will be coming out soon. Please watch for details in the Tidings. Questions? Please contact one of the members of the Sabbatical Team: Pastor John Angiulo, Anne Bailey, Owen Clymer, Jack Dean and Jean-Marie Huisjen. Thank you!

Need more Sunflower Notecards?

They make great gifts.

Find them in the narthex.

Proceeds go to the UCC Ukraine Relief.
