Office of Faculty and Academic Staff Development

Welcome to Spring Semester

January is National Mentoring Month, and we have been thinking about how to frame the work of OFASD as it connects to university culture change, to the Strategic Plans, to helping faculty and academic staff build fulfilling careers and feel connected in such a large and diverse institution. In recruiting students at any level, we talk about not just determining your major and areas of focus, but about finding your niche and “your people.” The same is true for faculty and academic staff. Most people really want to find those spaces where they can join in conversation with others who share their interests, professional and personal goals, and where they can just be their authentic selves.

Spring 2025 Leadership Institute Sessions

To help academic leaders engage with topics relevant to their positions, FASD offers the Leadership Institute series as one way for busy leaders to enhance their development. These 90-minute live webinars consist of presentations from university leaders providing real-world scenarios and opportunities for questions.

While most of the sessions tend to repeat annually, content is updated each year to reflect changes to current evolutions in approaches, policies, and processes. Leadership Institute sessions are required for department chairpersons, school directors, and associate deans of non-departmentally organized colleges within the first two years of their appointments; however, all other administrators are encouraged to attend sessions they would find helpful or if they are looking for updated information.

All Leadership Institute sessions take place from 9-10:30 a.m. on Zoom and will be recorded.

In October last year, FASD was very proud to recognize our own Dr. Marilyn Amey, Assistant Provost, as a recipient of Michigan State University’s Outstanding Supervisor Award!

Marilyn leads this small but mighty team with compassion, and empathy, and supports each of us in our professional journeys. We are a fortunate group to have such an exceptional leader and colleague!

MSU Faculty Emeriti Association Awards

The Faculty Emeriti Association is once again sponsoring its annual recognition awards. One award will recognize the efforts of an academic, support unit, or organization that has made an intentional effort to integrate MSU Faculty Emeriti into their unit through meaningful and substantive academic activities. The other award will recognize the outstanding contributions of an individual MSU Faculty Emeritus/Emerita or a team of MSU Faculty Emeriti, to the University.

Nominations are due by 11:59 pm on Thursday, February 20, 2025.

Thriving in Your Academic Career Series

The OFASD Academic Career Paths programming and resources provide guidance about faculty and academic staff careers – from when one enters the university, works toward promotion milestones, and transitions into late-career or retirement activities. We recognize the diversity of experiences, interests, expectations, needs, and career stages of faculty and academic staff. Our goal is to provide support for colleagues striving to create meaningful and productive professional and personal lives in alignment with – and contributing toward – the missions of Michigan State University.

One important way we do this is through the Thrive Series offered each year. These sessions present university frameworks for understanding the review process of each faculty and academic staff group, provide examples from those who have experience conceptualizing their work for review and who share ways they constructed careers here, and opportunity to answer questions. While there are differences tied to college and unit processes, these sessions are designed to help you think about your work and how you can effectively communicate the impact and importance of it to others for annual review and promotion.

Spring 2025 - Creating and Sustaining a Respectful Work Environment Series

Leaders play a crucial role in setting the tone for their units, and it’s equally important to provide leaders with the necessary support and tools to bring about positive change. Out of this need, a group of MSU offices came together to build a series of workshops and resources to help those who lead and supervise others. Now in its fifth year, the Creating and Sustaining a Respectful Work Environment Series brings together multiple institutional partners representing all employees, including academic staff, faculty, and staff.
