Welcome to the Fall Semester:

Embracing Opportunities This Academic Year

It’s hard to imagine that we’re already past September 20, officially welcoming fall. The weather doesn’t always serve as the best reminder, but campus is alive with students and activities almost 24/7. We welcomed over 240 new faculty and academic staff to New Faculty and Staff Orientation and over 60 new academic leaders at orientations in August. Many are brand new to East Lansing, and are busy acclimating to new roles and responsibilities. The President’s Investiture is coming up quickly where he will have opportunity to articulate some of the goals and aspirations he has for the university community, helping us become the global land-grant university of the future.

All the ways we commence a new year are full of aspirations and hopeful expectations for our students, our units, and ourselves. In a way, charting a path through the opportunities and tasks ahead might be comparable to how we think about syllabus construction, a meeting agenda, an exercise plan, or other experience that we organize – provide some structure so as not to become overwhelmed while keeping eyes open for unexpected options.

Thriving in Your Academic Career Series

The Academic Career Paths programming and resources provide guidance about faculty and academic staff careers–from when one enters the university, works toward promotion milestones, and transitions into late-career or retirement activities.

We recognize the diversity of experiences, interests, expectations, needs, and career stages of faculty and academic staff. Our goal is to provide support for colleagues striving to create meaningful and productive professional and personal lives in alignment with– and contributing toward– the missions of Michigan State University.

One important way we do this is through the Thrive Series offered each year. These sessions present university frameworks for understanding the review process of each faculty and academic staff group, provide examples from those who have experience conceptualizing their work for review and who share ways they constructed careers here, and opportunity to answer questions. While there are differences tied to college and unit processes, these sessions are designed to help you think about your work and how you can effectively communicate the impact and importance of it to others for annual review and promotion. Check out the upcoming virtual Thrive Series sessions that focus on different stages of an academic career.

If you are an academic specialist and have not yet responded to your invitation to attend the Thriving as an Academic Specialist on Oct. 2, 2024, from 9 - 11:30 AM click here to register.
