NEWS & NETWORKING

Documenting Your Work

October is full of many opportunities to reflect, remember, and celebrate. We are reminded through numerous postings, emails, newsletters, and various meetings we attend. Everything from National Coffee Day to World Mental Health Day, from World Teachers' Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day, from National Fine Art Appreciation Day, to Disability Pride Month, and from Filipino American History Month to LGBTQ+ Awareness Month, and numerous important faith observances that resonate with members of the MSU community.

Evidence from the research and our lived experiences clearly shows the importance of understanding what matters to others, especially to the multiple identities we hold. It is also clear that recognizing and offering praise for the accomplishments of our colleagues – large or small – helps create more inclusive and respectful work environments and an authentic sense of belonging for all. Learning effective ways to give feedback, praise and compliments to others is part of building connection, rapport, and community. It also requires paying attention in a busy world to a task well done, a meeting run smoothly, a pedagogical strategy that opened a new way of thinking, or an article shared that got you thinking in new ways. It requires looking up, listening, learning, asking questions, and really seeing the work of those around us.

On October 3, we hosted the Academic Leadership Fellows Fall Reception and Project Showcase. This event served as a welcome for our new cohort of Fellows for 2024-2025 and an opportunity for the 2023-2024 Fellows to share work they engaged with over the past year.

As part of the ALF experience, each fellow is paired with a campus leader to gain first-hand exposure to academic administration. Fellows also receive mentorship as they work on a project that aligns their leadership interests with institutional priorities.

Thriving in Your Academic Career Series

The OFASD Academic Career Paths programming and resources provide guidance about faculty and academic staff careers–from when one enters the university, works toward promotion milestones, and transitions into late-career or retirement activities. We recognize the diversity of experiences, interests, expectations, needs, and career stages of faculty and academic staff. Our goal is to provide support for colleagues striving to create meaningful and productive professional and personal lives in alignment with– and contributing toward– the missions of Michigan State University.

One important way we do this is through the Thrive Series offered each year. These sessions present university frameworks for understanding the review process of each faculty and academic staff group, provide examples from those who have experience conceptualizing their work for review and who share ways they constructed careers here, and opportunity to answer questions. While there are differences tied to college and unit processes, these sessions are designed to help you think about your work and how you can effectively communicate the impact and importance of it to others for annual review and promotion.
