Volume 3 | March 2021
The National Center for Family & Marriage Research (NCFMR) was established in 2007 to help improve our understanding of how family structure is linked to the health and well-being of children, adults, families, and communities and to inform policy development and programmatic responses.
What's News at the NCFMR
Grandchildren Living in Grandparent-Headed Households
Grandchildren residing with their grandparents is an increasingly common family form. Our latest Family Profile uses the American Community Survey (ACS) to examine grandchildren living in grandparent-headed households. Between 2009 and 2019, the share of grandchildren who lived with their grandparents increased from 7.2% to 8.4%. In 2019, the majority of grandchildren who resided with their grandparents had a parent present (74%), however, 26% lived in a “skipped-generation” household without a parent present. To learn more about grandchildren residing with their grandparents, check out
