Mill Creek Lake Update

Mill Creek Lake in Amherst County is experiencing a harmful algae bloom (HAB). The Virginia Department of Health is warning citizens to stay out of the water and to keep their pets and children out as well. The public is advised to avoid contact with the lake until algae concentrations return to acceptable levels. Some harmful algae, called cyanobacteria, can cause skin rash and gastrointestinal illnesses, such as upset stomach, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Upcoming SBDC Webinars

Help improve what’s known about small businesses: Survey now open

The Federal Reserve’s 2024 Small Business Credit Survey is now open, and the Virginia SBDC Network is a partner on this effort. Owners and key financial decisionmakers of for-profit businesses, share your recent experiences about whether and how you use debt, what financial conditions you face, and more.

Answers to these questions contribute to data that directly inform the Fed, federal government agencies, service providers, policymakers, and others—a public good ultimately benefiting your business and others like yours. Take the 12-minute survey now.

The survey is open to businesses currently in operation, those recently closed, and those about to launch. All responses are confidential.

The survey closes November 1, 2024.

The SBA is upgrading how our customers apply for and manage their federal contracting certifications beginning on August 1, 2024.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • Initial certification applications will not be accepted during the upgrade period.
  • The upgraded system is expected to be available for new applications in early September.
  • New and prospective applicants for federal small business certification are encouraged to wait until the upgrade is complete before applying.
  • Most certified firms will not be impacted by the pause in applications.
  • Firms needing to renew during the upgrade period will receive guidance from their certification program.
  • Applications submitted before August 1, 2024 will continue to be processed during the upgrade period in the order received.
  • If your firm is facing a deadline on a proposal that will be impacted by your certification status before August 1, 2024, please contact us at certifications@sba.gov and provide the contract number, agency, and bid due date.

Please reach out to your local Virginia Small Business Development Center if you have further questions.
