Important information on food resources from the United Way of Central VA.

As you may have seen, the federal government’s planned nonpayment of benefits under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) may have taken effect on November 1, 2025.

While two federal judges have ruled that the Administration must tap contingency funds to cover November SNAP benefits, the practical impact remains uncertain. Many Virginians—including working families, veterans, children, and seniors—are already facing heightened food insecurity due to the government shutdown and delays in benefit distribution.

To support your employees and community members who may be impacted, the United Way of Central Virginia is sharing the following verified resources and response measures:

Virginia Emergency Nutrition Assistance (VENA)

Governor Glenn Youngkin has declared a state of emergency allowing the use of state funds to issue VENA benefits to SNAP customers this month. Under VENA:

  • 25% of a customer’s monthly benefit will be issued weekly.
  • Weekly distribution will occur on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays based on the normal benefit schedule.

Learn more about VENA here

Find Local Food Assistance

United Way is collaborating with the 211 Network, families and individuals can find food assistance by ZIP code anywhere in Virginia:

Search for food assistance on 211.org or call 2-1-1.

Virginia Foodbanks

Virginia’s seven regional food banks are mobilizing support statewide.

Local Central Virginia resource locator

These tools feature multilingual support (13 languages) and interactive maps to locate the closest food distribution centers.

We encourage employers to share this information with staff as soon as possible.

United Way will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as new information becomes available.
