Madison is moving to spend $3.9 million to transform a two-story building and property on Lake Monona next to Olin Park into a community amenity with Parks Division offices, recreational programming, meeting rooms and more public restrooms for park users.

Metro Transit is proposing route changes that would shift almost 30% of buses from State Street, but it’s largely to accommodate the coming Bus Rapid Transit system, not a first step in transforming the city’s most renowned street into a pedestrian mall, officials said.

Developers of a 1,200-acre Jefferson County solar farm have delayed construction for two years to pursue federal financing. Ranger Power, which is planning to build the 149-megawatt plant to produce electricity for Dairyland Power Cooperative, last month received permission from state regulators to postpone construction until June 2023 in order to apply for a low-interest loan from the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service, which has several programs to support construction and improvement of the electric grid in rural areas.

The redevelopment of Westgate Mall is getting an assist from the state and the deconstruction of the storied property could begin as soon as next month. The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. has awarded a $250,000 Idle Sites Redevelopment Grant to the city of Madison to remove hazardous materials and help demolish the more than 200,000-square-foot vacant mall on the city's West Side.

Uncertainty, feelings of loss and a lack of definitive answers about the future are all facing the owners of 10 State Street businesses, many of whom have spent decades in downtown Madison’s shopping district. A proposed 10-story, 481-unit apartment building would displace them from their current storefronts.
