Marking a sharp contrast with the city of Madison, Dane County is refusing to disclose what options it is considering for a major redevelopment project — one of the biggest in county history — before deciding which proposal to pursue.

Buying a hotel to house homeless people, building another tiny house village, making camping easier, searching for car camping sites — all are part of a major Dane County proposal that would put at least $7 million in federal COVID-19 relief funding toward housing solutions for the county’s homeless population.

Dane County has awarded $770,000 in grants to fund five regional bike infrastructure projects, including what’s billed as a “world class” skills park in Middleton. County Executive Joe Parisi said the projects will enhance quality of life and create new opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Three years after buying a swath of property south of Hilldale, the shopping center’s owner has announced it is moving forward with plans to expand the open-air mall.
