Summer 2022 Newsletter
Greetings!

Changing the system doesn't happen overnight. It takes many smaller changes, done by the people working in the system who understand that a new paradigm of care is needed. By supporting and working with you, direct caregivers and care partners, we are creating a new reality in memory care: one in which persons diagnosed with dementia are viewed as individuals with lives worth living, and whose abilities, interests, and preferences are respected, encouraged, and facilitated.

Adopting a new model of care requires a new view of those receiving care. We've spent years designing a way to measure retained abilities that can be used to create person-centered care plans, an approach that improves upon the common single-score assessments. The finish line is in sight for the Person-Centered Montessori Abilities System™, and we have begun accepting pre-orders for anyone ready to focus on the person, rather than their deficits. Scroll down for more information on reserving your PCMAS™ kit.

Earlier this year, we awarded the first Montessori Inspired Lifestyle® credential to an Adult Day Care community. Goldenberry Adult Day Caring Center in Clinton Township, MI has shown that the benefits of a Montessori approach extend beyond residential care, and have opened the door to improving quality of life for ADC clients and beyond.

Serving up choice and dignity in aged care – how meals are enjoyed is about more than what’s on the plate
Meals are rituals built around pleasures and choices. While what is served at mealtimes in aged care homes has received recent attention, new research highlights that how meals are offered is just as important.

Read more about how communities are applying Montessori principles to foster independence and engagement during meals, and promote a sense of community.

Clay Mixing
Squeezing activities facilitate the ability to grasp objects and use tools, allowing participants to interact more effectively with the environment. Additionally, squeezing helps develop hand and finger muscle conditioning, range of motion, and fine motor skill development.
Food Preparation
Getting a person with dementia to help prepare food is a good way to promote eating, and engage an individual in a social activity. The sight and smell of food being prepared can stimulate interest in tasting the food, and can access memories surrounding dining, cooking and baking. In this activity, we present several different examples of food preparation.
