House passes stopgap bill that extends health programs but omits ACA premium tax credits


What you need to know: The U.S. House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to keep the government funded through Nov. 21, 2025, and temporarily extend many expiring health care programs, but not the enhanced premium tax credits under the Affordable Care Act. The bill now heads to the United States Senate, where most Democrats have said they will oppose unless it includes an ACA tax credit extension. CMA is urging physicians to contact Congress to extend ALL expiring health care programs, including the ACA tax credits critical to keeping coverage affordable. More...

Governor signs new law safeguarding vaccine access in California


What you need to know: Gov. Newsom this week signed AB 144, which includes provisions strongly supported by CMA that will protect Californians’ access to life-saving vaccines amid federal uncertainty. The law sets a clear baseline for vaccine insurance coverage and authorizes the state to modify the recommendations to align with new evidence-based guidance. On the same day, the West Coast Health Alliance released joint recommendations for the 2025–26 COVID-19, influenza and RSV vaccines, offering clarity as turmoil continues at the CDC. More...

CMA urges U.S. Dept. of Ed to preserve physician eligibility for public service loan forgiveness



What You Need to Know: CMA has urged the U.S. Dept. of Education to abandon a proposed rule that could disqualify nonprofit hospitals that provide gender-affirming care from participation in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. CMA warned that such a change would cut off loan forgiveness for many physicians, undermining efforts to recruit and retain physicians — especially in rural and medically underserved communities already facing severe physician shortages. CMA joins lawsuit against MultiPlan and leading insurance providers over health care price-fixing


What you need to know: CMA has joined a sweeping federal antitrust lawsuit against MultiPlan (now Claritev) and major insurers including UnitedHealth, Elevance, Humana, Aetna and Cigna, alleging they conspired to depress out-of-network physician payments below operating costs.
