ND Academic OverDrive Consortium Funding
We are pleased to announce that the North Dakota State Library will pay the licensing fees for the first year of all new academic OverDrive customers who commit to the new academic consortium by October 1, 2022. We are working with OverDrive to determine if there is a way to renew the licensing fees for existing customers by the end of the year so that we can pay those fees as well.
In addition to startup costs, the State Library will purchase a collection that will be available for all consortium members on launch day. We are excited to be able to provide this funding for our academic community via the Institute of Museum and Library Services through the American Rescue Plan Act.
If you have any questions, please contact James W. Murphy at jwmurphy@nd.gov, ndsl-ld@nd.gov, or (701) 328-3495.

North Dakota Vocational Rehabilitation
Senior Community Service Employment Program
| |
The Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) is a community service and work-based job training program for older Americans.
Authorized by the Older Americans Act, the SCSEP matches people 55 and older with part-time work opportunities to help not-for-profit employers and community organizations meet their workforce needs. SCSEP participants gain work experience in a variety of community service activities at non-profit and public facilities. Participants work an average of 20 hours a week and are paid the highest of federal, state, or local minimum wage. Participants must be at least 55, unemployed, and have a family income of no more than 125% of the federal poverty level. This program is currently serving 14 counties.
There may be some libraries that could use some help but can’t necessarily pay someone. This program pays participants while you train them to help you.
For more information about this program or to see the SCSEP Administrator can match up a participant with your library, please contact Cheri Young, SCSEP Administrator, at 1-701-204-3279 or clyoung@nd.gov.

Beginning of the School Year Activities |
Welcome back, educators! The first few weeks of school can be a bit daunting, but also an exciting time. In today’s Teaching Tidbit, I am going to highlight some beginning-of-the-school-year activities.
For Librarians and Library Staff
- Determine checkout procedures.
- How will students and teachers check out materials?
- Lunch numbers?
- Student/Teacher ID numbers?
- By their names?
- Otherwise assigned barcodes?
- Will a keypad be used by patrons to input barcodes, or, will barcodes be scanned by library staff?
- Is there a limit to how many materials each library user may check out at once?
- How long are materials checked out? One week? Two weeks? A month?
- How often may materials be renewed?

A Quick Reminder From The New Grants Coordinator
Submitted by James W. Murphy
I hope everything is going well with your Library Vision grant application process. If you would like me to review your grant application for feedback, please email it no later than the close of business next Friday, August 26th. The sooner I receive it, the more attention I can give you in the feedback process. If your library has not used Counting Opinions before, I would also recommend making sure your account and login are ready to go before the 26th, as well.
Finally, I already had a vacation scheduled before I moved into this position, so I will not be available for assistance on the afternoon of the 30th or the entire day of the 31st. Please try not to wait until the last couple of days if you think you might need any help. We are excited to see all the interesting ideas that you have for your libraries!
Please contact me at jwmurphy@nd.gov or at 701-328-3495.

Software Overview: XnConvert |
Software for digitization projects or digital collection management can get expensive, particularly when you need multiple programs for different purposes (editing, converting, renaming, etc.) and formats (images, documents, video, audio, OCR, etc.). The Digital Initiatives Department is all for low-cost options when it comes to software.
Last month, an overview was provided of how awesome GIMP is as a free image editor. This month, we’ll examine another useful image software: XnConvert. According to its website, XnConvert is “a fast, powerful and free cross-platform batch image converter.” All common image formats are supported.
