NewsLitCamp: Misinformation, Disinformation, and
Qualities of Journalism
|
|
Last week, I attended the webinar “NewsLitCamp: Misinformation” sponsored by the News Literacy Project. This all-day event covered topics such as types of misinformation and disinformation, teaching resources, standards of journalism, curating resources, the point-of-view of teenagers concerning false information, navigating extremism and hate speech, and teaching students how to be excellent fact-checkers. Since this event covered a great deal of topics, I will discuss them over the course of the next few weeks. For week twelve of Tammy’s Teaching Tidbit, I want to talk about false information categories and criteria for quality journalism.
Both misinformation and disinformation involve data that is false; however, the intent of this falsification differs.
Misinformation is created without any intent to manipulate nor be malicious. Oftentimes, misinformation is created to bring humor to a topic. Many memes fall under misinformation; satire also falls under this umbrella. That is not to say that all misinformation pokes fun at a topic. Medical inaccuracies typically fall under misinformation. They are not spread with the goal of causing harm; however, they are also not backed by actual scientific evidence.
