KitKeeper Update

The State Library will be making some changes to our checkout procedures for STEM Kits and Book Club Kits over the next couple of months. We will discontinue Kitkeeper. All kits will be cataloged into Polaris and be searchable and reservable in the Polaris online catalog, just like any other item in the State Library’s collection.

We are starting with the Book Club Kits and should have them done by the middle of August. We hope to have the STEM kits cataloged and available by the start of the school year.

The upside of the change will be better searching through Polaris, better data on Kit usage, better tracking for inventory, and a much easier to use interface. The downside is that kits will no longer be reservable for a specific date, months in advance. We acknowledge that’s a big downside. Libraries and individual patrons will be able to put a hold on Kits in the same manner as the rest of the collection. We believe this will allow more access to the kits by a wider audience.

Books By North Dakota Authors Selected To Represent

Our State At The 2022 National Book Festival

Submitted by Tammy Kruger

North Dakota Center for the Book has selected two titles for the 2022 National Book Festival: The Farmer’s Lawyer by Sarah Fogel and An Epic Series of Failures: The Rise of Greg by Chris Rylander.

Both novels will be part of the National Center for the Book’s Great Reads from Great Places program. This program highlights books and authors representing each state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa, Northern Marianas, and Guam. Once a year, representatives come to Washington, D.C., to share their state/territory’s picks with one another and the public. This year’s National Book Festival will be held on September 3rd. Although it is back to in-person, live-streamed and recorded virtual programs are included. Some features of the book festival include discussion panels with selected authors, book signings, and trinkets from exhibitor booths. Members of the public are encouraged to visit each booth and receive a stamp on their Roadmap to Reading.

Farm And Ranch Stress Assistance Network

Submitted by Betty Schneider, ND Mediation Service Coordinator

The North Dakota Department of Agriculture (NDDA) received a $500,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). NIFA’s Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network (FRSAN) connects farmers, ranchers, and others in agriculture-related occupations to stress assistance programs. NDDA will partner with North Dakota State University and the North Dakota Department of Career and Technical Education to initiate, expand, or sustain programs that provide professional agricultural behavioral health counseling and referral for other forms of assistance as necessary through farm telephone helplines and websites, training programs and workshops; support groups; and outreach services and activities.

North Dakota libraries can play an important role in getting the word out that this assistance is available to our farmers and ranchers. More information about this service can be found at www.nd.gov/ndda/frsan.

Brochures describing this program are available to libraries, free of charge. If you would like to order brochures, please contact Betty Schneider at 701-328-4158 or [email protected].

This work is supported by the Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Survey Participation Request Focusing On Public Libraries’ Readiness For Weather-Related Disasters

Submitted by Monika Antonelli

Professor, MLS, MS, Outreach Librarian, Library Services

Minnesota State University, Mankato

We are asking for your help to benchmark both public library preparedness for disaster and their contribution to community resilience efforts. This research is being conducted by Monika Antonelli (Minnesota State University, Mankato), Rebekkah Smith Aldrich (Mid-Hudson Library System), Adrian K. Ho (University of Chicago), and René Tanner (Rollins College).

The short survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is intended for public library directors or public library administrators. The aim of the project is to aid the researchers in assessing U.S. public libraries’ readiness for weather-related disasters as institutions, as well as to assess how public libraries can provide assistance to their communities’ recovery in the wake of weather-related disasters.

If you would like to participate in this Minnesota State University, Mankato study (IRBNet ID 1919288) please click on this link to go to the survey. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Monika via email at [email protected]. The survey will close on August 31, 2022.

N.D. Out-of-School-Time Conference

Submitted by Tammy Kruger

Approximately 100 youth development, afterschool educators, paraprofessionals, school librarians, and children advocates gathered for the ND Out-of-School-Time Conference in Fargo on August 2nd and 3rd. ND Out-of-School-Time is a part of the North Dakota Afterschool Network. This event focused on establishing interpersonal relationships, building up youths’ confidence, reinforcing 21st-century skills, and creating atmospheres where everyone feels welcomed and appreciated.

While the sessions focused on PreK-twelfth-grade students, the lessons can easily translate into programs and resources for library users across the ages. For example, Meredith Scott Lynn, founder and CEO of Write Brain Books, conducted sessions where participants used pictorial writing prompts to create their own short stories. They started with a draft. Then, they revised using more enhanced language. Lastly, they presented their final products. The concepts of expressing oneself creatively, revising those creative works, and presenting to an audience are as pertinent of skills for second graders and college freshmen as they are for senior citizens!
