| Hugo Boss Starts the Vendee Globe Race with Doyle Stratis ICE |
|
Alex Thomson and Hugo Boss Challenge
"The Everest of the Seas"
With Doyle Stratis ICE
The 2016-2017 Vendee Globe Race,
nicknamed "The Everest of the Seas", began on November 6th. The Vendee is a non-stop, singlehanded race around the globe. It is considered, by many, to be the most challenging sporting event of our day.
This Vendee will be a particularly exciting one. Seven of the 29 IMOCA 60s participating feature Dynamic Stability System foils (DSS) for increased stability. These foils will also increase the likelihood of hitting floating objects and, at times, make life aboard very tense.
Unlike catamarans with foils, IMOCA 60s do not rise completely out of the water. The foils add stability without adding weight. DSS boats are greatly faster at times but the system certainly raises the level of intensity and discomfort. One cannot walk while at speed. You must crawl. Some skippers are wearing padding as the motion of these boats can be so violent that they are being thrown about without warning. The foils SCREAM! The carbon rigging SCREAMS! They are alone in the ocean, strapped to these rockets for about 80 days if they are lucky. You can see a little of what it is like for Alex, his remarkable boat and her beautiful sails by watching this short video.
Alex and his team worked very hard to find every little speed advantage that they could for Hugo Boss. That is why they chose Doyle Stratis ICE sails. Doyle Stratis is the best performing, lightest, most durable sail membrane product available in the world today.
You can follow Alex and the Vendee Globe Race on the race tracker. If you backtrack you can see Hugo Boss muscle her way into the lead with pure boat speed.

The Botin 65, Caro, also powered by Doyle Stratis, finished a close second. If you would like to see
Maverick go, click on her picture for a video link. Her speed is beyond impressive.
