Before you waste precious time on an ECU reflash or attempting to program a transponder key, check if an engine immobilizer system is standard or optional on the vehicle. Also check if the customer has an aftermarket keyless entry remote.

There are great resource books like Mike Hyde's 'Transponders' that will let you know if an immobilizer system is standard or optional on a vehicle.

If it is optional, then the next step is to use KeylessRide iD tool (immobilizer detector) and while holding it around the ignition cylinder and pressing the red iD test button, turn the key (customer's current key or a test key) in the ignition. The iD tool LED will light up with 'immobilizer Detected' to confirm if there is an immobilizer system polling for a transponder. Imagine how long it could potentially take to unnecessarily pull out an ECU/ECM or dig around for a non-existent immo box from behind a dash! Plus our iD product is a good looking diagnostic tool when you use it in front of a customer...just like all our tools! J
