Building Community Care
If you’ve travelled along Angeline Street North in Lindsay recently, you may have gotten a glimpse of our new Community Care Campus. The new building will house our Community Health Centre and is our very first “owned building”, which represents a meaningful milestone in our history. With 16,000 square feet, we will have lots of space to welcome our clients to our new building by late summer 2023.
Follow along with us over the next couple months as we share updates on the progress of our Community Care Campus. Make sure you are signed up to receive our newsletter and are following our social media channels so you can see how we are #BuildingCommunityCare.

A Special Thank You Message
We have a wonderful team of caring Personal Support Workers (PSWs) that provide personal care and homemaking support for clients in our community to help them continue to live as independently at home as possible. We want to share a wonderful thank you note we received about one of our PSWs, Adam, from a caregiver of one of our clients:
“Please convey our sincere thanks to Adam. [Our son] Alan has been blossoming due to his care and kindness. For the past number of years we have tried and tried to teach Alan how to independently make his supper. Imagine our surprise when he casually announced that Adam taught him to make pizza in the air fryer. We just about fell over in shock.
Adam engages with Alan, learned that he had an interest in guitar, and treated him as an equal when showing him how the guitar works. So many people treat developmentally delayed individuals differently and/or talk down to them. Not Adam. Adam is truly making a difference.
Please pass this along to Adam. We are so pleased that he is in Alan’s life.”
Please join us in thanking Adam for making a true difference in our community!

The Best Kept Secret in Hospice Care
When you type the sentence, “What is grief in palliative care?” Google generates the following answer:
“Grief is how we respond when we experience loss. Grief is a normal, natural and inevitable response to loss and it can affect every part of our lives. Grief can seem like a roller-coaster ride with ups and downs, or it may feel like we are being battered about like a little boat in a storm”.
Ask Google the question, “What type of care is given by Hospice Services?” and the answer generated is “end of life care”. You would be hard pressed to find the word ‘grief’ in the answer at all. Yet in terms of statistics, grief support makes up nearly half of the overall care offered by Hospices in Ontario.
CCCKL's grief and bereavement volunteers and facilitators often find themselves educating community members about the grief supports offered by CCCKL. The families of palliative clients, who have been supported through the Palliative Care Community Team are offered bereavement support after the death of their loved one, however the public are often surprised to learn that we offer a variety of support groups. These groups support our youngest clients from age six and up, all the way to adults and seniors. Any type of loss, including suicide, overdose, sudden and tragic loss, is supported by Hospice Services.
We have been helping people walk the journey of grief since the 1990’s and need your help to spread the word about our services. The words ‘best kept secret’ need to be replaced with what we truly do, and that is, ‘the best grief support in Hospice care’.
Hospice Services is here to help. When you reach out to us, you will find a comforting place, specialized programs and highly trained people to help transform hurt into hope. Visit our website or call us at 705-324-7323 ext 550 to learn more about our Hospice Services.

CEO Column:
Accreditation 2023: Reflecting on Our Values
By: CEO Barb Mildon
|
|
Earlier this month, CCCKL once again welcomed surveyors from Accreditation Canada to complete an in-depth evaluation of the strengths and gaps in our care and services. Surveyors Gayle Campbell from Argyle, City of Kawartha Lakes, and Gregory Cummings from British Columbia spent three and a half intensive days with us as we enthusiastically showed them the scope and impact of the daily work performed by CCCKL’s people and teams. Gayle and Gregory observed numerous programs and services first-hand including in-home personal support, primary clinical care, Adult Day activities, Specialized Transportation, Meals on Wheels and GAIN Team (Geriatric Assessment and Integration Network). They also met with committees such as Ethics, Quality Management, Client and Caregiver Advisory Council and our Board of Directors. I extend special thanks to the members of our Client and Caregiver Advisory Council for meeting with Gayle and Gregory. More special thanks to the many CCCKL external partners who took time to attend a focus group with our Surveyors to share their perspectives about working with us.
Although we won’t have the official results of their evaluation for a while yet, Gayle and Gregory were clearly impressed by what they saw and heard! Their comments at the debrief session were enthusiastic and positive. They praised our focus on continuous quality improvement and our work on client safety and client engagement, while at the same time, they pointed us to opportunities to strengthen our attention to become more environmentally friendly (i.e. green) and to broaden the emergency preparedness scenarios included in our current policies.
An organization’s values provide the foundation for accreditation and it seemed to me that CCCKL’s values of Compassion; Accountability; Respect; and Excellence were strongly visible through our Accreditation process. Demonstrating compliance with the strict Accreditation Canada Standards reflects Accountability and Excellence. Surveyors and accreditation participants were treated with dignity and graciousness by all they encountered, reflecting our value of Respect. Compassion shone through in the stories and feedback clients so generously shared about their experiences with our people and programs.
There is no doubt that values will continue to guide and inspire CCCKL as it moves forward. The current development of our 2023-2026 Strategic Plan is providing an opportunity to test, validate and/or revise our Values. Please share your thoughts or suggestions at AskUs@ccckl.ca.
Warmly,
Barb Mildon
