We Are Community Care Video Series
For this month’s release in our We Are Community Care video series, we are pleased to introduce our Caring for Caregivers video.
One in four Canadians act as a caregiver to a loved one. At Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes, we're here to support those supporting the most vulnerable members of our community.

|
|
This video tells the story of Zita and Brian Devan, a married couple whose story of caring for one another inspires us in our work to support caregivers in our community.

Client Satisfaction Survey
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to everyone that took the time to complete our Client Satisfaction Survey. Thanks to your efforts, we received over 450 responses and received invaluable feedback on how we can improve care and supportive programs in our community.
We are pleased to report that 88% of respondents agree we work with you and involve you to provide the best care possible. A further 85% agree we listen to and address any concerns you have related to your care. Overall, 90% are satisfied with how we answer your questions or facilitate your needs.
We are also using your individual feedback from this survey as well as from the focus groups we hosted earlier this month to help shape our Community Care strategic plan for the next three years. Your input will be used to help us continue to build healthy communities through care and support and to improve the programs and services we offer.

A Tribute to Dorothy Wayne
Back in our October newsletter, we shared the story of how a group of our Hospice Riverwalkers lovingly restored a dilapidated bench they found while out on an stroll through the labyrinth garden on McLaughlin Rd. in Lindsay. The beautifully restored bench, now sitting at our Hospice Services patio, came with a little plaque dedicated to Dorothy Wayne. The group tried to learn more about Dorothy but had no luck in their search, so we put out the request to our community asking for help to solve this mystery.
We received several phone calls with leads, but none of them panned out. That is however until we received a call one Friday afternoon from Dorothy Wayne's daughter, Dottie. She got the news from her nephew in Nova Scotia about the bench and reached out to us immediately.
|
|
Dottie described her mother as being "full of life and she had a great sense of humour. She loved to tell jokes to everyone that listened."
Thank you to everyone in our community that came forward with leads and tips to help us solve this mystery.
A special thanks to Kawartha Lakes This Week for following up with Dottie and sharing the story of Dorothy Wayne. You can read the full story below:

A New CEO Announced for Community Care
On December 14, 2022 CCCKL Board Chair Michael Anderson announced the upcoming retirement of Barb Mildon, CEO and the appointment of Ryan Alexander of Lindsay, Ontario as the incoming CEO, effective April 1, 2023.
Ryan is well known and highly regarded at CCCKL and by partners and stakeholders within the community. From 2011 to 2022, he held progressive positions at CCCKL, including Health Promoter, Manager of Hospice Services and then Director of Community Support Services. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Science Degree (Applied Health Science) from Brock University.
Ryan returns to CCCKL after leaving in March of 2022 to pursue a new career at Tim Hortons. While he gained valuable private sector experience there, Ryan knows that the healthcare sector is where he belongs and he is excited to return to CCCKL to lead, champion, and drive forward our Mission, Vision and Values to benefit our community.
Barb Mildon joined CCCKL in June of 2018 and has provided calm and decisive leadership as the organization navigated through the COVID pandemic, the introduction of Ontario Health Teams and advancing construction of our new Community Health Centre.
Ryan rejoined CCCKL on January 9th 2023 and a three-month CEO transition process is now underway. Ryan takes the helm at CCCKL at an exciting time for the organization as it develops a new strategic plan to begin on April 1, 2023 and looks ahead to the completion of the new Community Health Centre.

CEO Column:
Update on our New Community Health Centre
By: CEO Barb Mildon
|
|
I am frequently asked what is happening at the corner of Angeline St. North and Kent St. and what timeline it involves. Watching our new Community Health Centre (CHC) take shape is interesting and exciting, and I am happy to provide this update. The builder for our centre is Chart Construction Company (Woodbridge), and the Chart team is hard at work to bring the architectural plans developed by Lett Architects (Peterborough) to life. With the walls now up and the windows installed, intensive work is now underway on the inside of the building.
As many of you know, the journey to this new building has been a long one. Talks began with the Ontario Ministry of Health (Health Capital Investment Branch) in 2009 under the direction of CCCKL’s Founder, Valmay Barkey.

A rendering of our new Community Health Centre building

|
The first green light for the Building was given by the Ministry in 2013. It then took until 2016 to find a location for the new building – a goal accomplished when former CEO Cathy Danbrook was successful in working with Infrastructure Ontario to purchase the land occupied by the former OPP Building. Over time the OPP building was demolished and the site was cleared to make way for our new CHC.
As you have heard or read about in previously published stories, our new CHC is a one-story building of 16,242 square feet and will cost approximately $14M. It has a steel structure and metal siding. Clerestory windows (windows higher than eye level) are designed to bring natural light into the building. There is a main 1.5 storey gallery space that acts as the main entry point and provides access to reception, the waiting room and various multi-purpose and program spaces. It is anticipated that we will move into the newly constructed building by late summer of this year.
We are very grateful that the majority of the cost for the building is being funded by the Government of Ontario and also extend thanks to the City of Kawartha Lakes for their financial support. Despite this generous support, not all costs are covered. Additionally, as with almost all construction projects during and since the pandemic, persistent supply chain issues and price increases are a constant reality. Accordingly, CCCKL will soon launch a fundraising campaign to get us across the construction finish line and moved into our new Community Health Centre.

Kawartha Credit Union Grants $2,000 to the Community Care Foundation

The Community Care Foundation is excited to announce we received a generous $2,000 donation from long time supporters and friends, Kawartha Credit Union (KCU). These funds are awarded through KCU’s Community Involvement program. They will go towards enhancing our program funding pool, which helps clients who are struggling to afford fees get access to health and support services at a reduced rate or free of charge.
The Community Involvement program is dedicated to making a difference in the regions KCU serves. We thank KCU for continuing to be a supporter for Community Care. We are thankful to have such wonderful people in our community that we can always rely on.
