Guided Meditation
By: Sharon Yeo, Hospice Services Manager
When you think of meditation, you may initially picture someone sitting quietly cross-legged and emptying their mind. However, there is much more to meditation than just sitting in silence. Meditation is a practice that has been around for thousands of years, but the benefits of meditation are still relevant today.
Meditation may just seem like you’re doing absolutely nothing, but it’s actually much harder than it appears. If you are having trouble meditating on your own or need assistance, you can have someone guide you through meditation in a process called guided meditation. What’s great about meditation is that it’s free, it doesn’t require any tools or equipment, and is not a huge time commitment. You can start with 5 minutes of meditation a day to de-stress and relax.
When you meditate, you clear away the clutter that builds up every day and contributes to stress. The emotional benefits of meditation include:
- Gaining a new perspective on stressful situations
- Building skills to manage your stress
- Lengthening attention span
- Increasing self-awareness
- Focusing on the present
- Reducing negative emotions
- Improving sleep
There are many videos available online; from 5 minutes to much longer. We attached a couple, but we encourage you to find one that works for you. Please take a few minutes for you.

CCCKL’s 2023-2026 Strategic Plan Development Underway
By: CEO Barb Mildon
|
|
CCCKL’s current Strategic Plan runs until March 31, 2023. As we focus on closing out our current plan, it is also time to begin the development of our next plan. While developing a Strategic Plan is an activity common to almost all organizations, questions often arise about why it is done.
One of the benefits of a strategic plan is to help an organization understand and adapt to its current business environment. Time is set aside to consider what new service needs our community may have as well as what has changed with regard to the people we serve, the community in which we do business, our team members, volunteers and our stakeholders. Strategic planning also allows us to identify risks and opportunities related to our programs and funding sources. It sharpens our focus and helps us make decisions that steer us in achieving the elements and initiatives in the Plan. All of those activities facilitate CCCKL’s ongoing contributions to our clients and communities and our continuing relevance and sustainability.
To launch development of our new strategic plan, the Board of directors and Management Team attended a retreat in late October to look back at our 2020-2023 Strategic Plan and think about what comes next. A highlight of the gathering was short presentations by four invited guests: Ron Taylor, Chief Administrative Officer at the City of Kawartha Lakes; Michelle Wilson, Member of the CCCKL Client and Caregiver Advisory Council, Frances Lavender, CCCKL Volunteer and Veronica Nelson, Chief Operating Officer at Ross Memorial Hospital and also Co-Lead of our Kawartha Lakes Ontario Health Team. Through their individual and collective perspectives and advice we were reminded to be aware of significant pending population growth in the City of Kawartha Lakes; that volunteers are at the heart of CCCKL; that we must address the needs of an increasingly diverse population and we must provide leadership in making it easier for people to access healthcare services and decrease the fragmentation in our health care system.
Outcomes of the retreat included draft Strategic Directions for our new plan. The next step is to consult with the public, our clients, volunteers, staff members, partners and stakeholders for their vital input and advice to shape the final version of the 2023-2026 Strategic Plan. I extend special thanks to the members of our Client and Caregiver Advisory Group who took time during their regular meeting on November 22nd to provide their valuable guidance. Please look for announcements of public meetings to take place the week of January 9, 2023 in locations throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes. I extend thanks to all who have been, or will be involved in creating our new Strategic Plan and look forward to its unveiling in the months to come.
Warmly,
Barb Mildon

Community Care's Foundation Holiday Appeal is Online Now!
|
|
As the holidays approach, the Community Care Foundation is once again reaching out to our community to ask for your generous support. This year, our annual holiday appeal highlights our incredible kind-hearted, and dedicated volunteers, and the Community Care programs they bring to life. Volunteers are the essential ingredient in helping CCCKL ensure that no one gets left behind and that everyone has access to care and services that improve their health and independence.
Your donation will ensure members of our community can stay connected to the volunteer-led services they need most, whether through a hot meal delivery, a friendly visit or a ride to an important appointment. Help our Community Care Volunteers give the gift of wellbeing and joy to those in our community who need it. To read more about our volunteers and the pivotal services they provide, check out our holiday appeal.
