Hospice Memorial Service 2024

On November 21st, Hospice Services hosted their Annual Memorial Service at Celebrations in Lindsay. The event was meaningful and well-attended, offering an opportunity for participants to remember and honour their loved ones who have died. The service included a performance by Brian Farmer, who sang "Time in a Bottle," and music by Joy Cross on piano. As the names were read aloud, Hospice Volunteer Shirley Park added a special touch by playing the harp.

A cherished tradition was upheld with the placement of leaves—participants were invited to write the names of their loved ones on paper leaves and place them on a lighted birch tree branch as part of the evening's tribute. After the service, many enjoyed a comforting cup of coffee and shared time with others.

At Hospice Services, we are here to help. When you reach out, you'll find a caring environment, specialized programs, and compassionate professionals ready to guide you through life's most difficult moments. For more information, please visit our website at www.ccckl.ca/hospice  or call us at 705-324-7323 ext. 550.

Meet Joan

For the past 10 years, Joan has been a client of Community Care City of Kawartha Lakes (CCCKL), a connection that began after a fall landed her in the hospital. It was her son-in-law who first reached out to CCCKL, recognizing that Joan needed extra support as she faced challenges with her mobility.

Joan started with Meals on Wheels, receiving nutritious meals delivered right to her door. As her needs grew, she also began using CCCKL's transportation services, allowing her to continue to go out for appointments and errands. But the most significant change in her life came with the introduction of Personal Support Workers (PSWs).

Today, Joan receives PSW visits every day of the week. These visits provide more than just physical assistance—they bring a sense of security, comfort, and companionship. Joan’s PSWs help with everything from personal care to light housekeeping, ensuring that she can stay in her home, where she feels happiest and most at ease.

We offer over 40 programs and services that help people like Joan maintain their health and independence. How can we help you? Visit our website at www.ccckl.ca or contact us at

Share Your CCCKL Story

At Community Care, every client has a story to tell. Whether it’s getting a hot meal delivered to your home so you don’t need to worry about cooking, or knowing you always have a reliable ride to an important appointment. Our clients benefit from our services every day in every way.

These client stories help the community connect with and understand the services we provide. We are inviting you to share your story with us about how CCCKL has made a difference for your independence and quality of life. Your story is our story.

National Grief and Bereavement Day

Grief is a powerful, universal experience yet it can often create a sense of separation between us and those around us, whether we’re the ones grieving or supporting someone who is. National Grief and Bereavement Day, observed on November 19, 2024, is a dedicated time for each of us to reflect on loss, recognize its impact, and make meaningful connections with those navigating this difficult journey.

For anyone touched by grief, knowing how to reach out—or ask for support—can be daunting. At Hospice Services, we understand that grief is natural and necessary; it’s our way of processing loss, and it cannot be "cured." It is more than just the pain we feel; it encompasses the memories, love, and transformation that shape our healing journey. Grief has no timetable or expiry date; it stays with us in various forms throughout life.

When we do not address our grief, it can intensify suffering, strain our relationships, and even impact our physical health. When we allow ourselves to grieve fully, we can embrace not only sorrow but also the joy of remembrance and love. As social beings, we need safe, supportive spaces where we can share these complex emotions with others who understand.

Hospice Services offers that safe, non-judgmental space, with specialized programs and a compassionate, highly trained team to help you process your loss and turn hurt into hope. On this National Grief and Bereavement Day, let’s honour our own journeys and those of others by reaching out, listening, and remembering together.

Stay Well This Flu Season

Public health now considers flu season as “Respiratory Season”, which includes influenza, RSV and COVID-19 infections. As a reminder to stay safe during the months between November and March, here are some tips:

  1.  Get vaccinated: the flu vaccine is updated annually to protect against the most common strains of the flu virus; stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccine and boosters as recommended by health authorities; RSV vaccine for certain groups, infants and older adults or those with underlying health conditions should see their provider to see if they are eligible.
  2. Practice good hygiene: wash hands frequently, use tissues or cough/sneeze into your elbows, and avoid touching your face to prevent transferring germs
  3. Wear a mask: put on a mask in crowded or high-risk areas and practice physical distancing to decrease exposure to germs.
  4. Monitor your health: stay home if you are sick. If you develop symptoms such as fever, cough, or shortness of breath, stay home to prevent spreading illness. Return to work only after symptoms get better within 24 hours and no fever medication has been used (48 hours if you have gastro symptoms), and wear a mask for 10 days returning to work or out in public.
  5. Keep your environment clean: regularly clean your work area, and disinfect frequently touched surfaces.
  6. Boost your Immune System: eat a balanced diet, stay hydrated, get enough sleep and exercise regularly.
  7. Know when to seek medical help: seek care for severe symptoms; early intervention is important.

By following these guidelines and staying informed, you can reduce your risk of catching or spreading flu, RSV and COVID-19 during peak season. These measures not only protect your health but also contribute to the well-being of your community.
